My 05 CRD has antifreeze leaking into the #2 cylinder. I've read the procedure in the service manual and I feel confident that I can handle the head replacement but thought I'd see if anyone else has already tackled the job and had some good pointers. (About 10,000 miles ago I did the timing belt replacement and changed the water pump). I am suspecting a cracked head but figured I would get the head off and confirm that's what it is before I order a new one. Although I hear it is very unlikely, maybe I'll get lucky and it will just be a blown head gasket.

Another concern is parts availablity. I plan to get my parts list developed and order them at moparonlineparts.com or one of the other online sites.

Any input/advice is welcomed.

Mine was replaced under extended warranty - after they replaced ~8 or 10 #2 glow plugs
final proof was pressurizing the radiator overnight and the next morning there was antifreeze on the GP.....

check with GDE about the issues - they haven't mentioned a head replacement - but they're really up to date on potential problems (main one is probably getting everything aligned properly)

It did sound like head gaskets have to be the correct thickness - I think there are 3 or 4 variants depending on how the rest of the assembly measures

Thanks for the reply. I did read about the different head gasket thicknesses in the FSM so I'll be sure to check that. Sounds like you were fortunate to get yours done under warranty. I saw that the cylinder head is $1,207.50 at moparonlineparts. I hope that is a fully assembled head with new valves and all.

I actually think that the head on my CRD has been cracked for a long time and it has just progressively gotten worse. About 50 or 60K miles ago it ran hot while pulling a boat. That was when I still had the clutch fan on it which I have now replaced with a fixed flex fan.

How many miles did yours have when you had the head replaced? How many miles have you ran on the new head?

That price is HIGHLY unlikely to include anything other than the head itself. Replacing the valves and rockers (like if you bugger the timing and the rockers all snap) will cost you $960 JUST for the rocker arms - They are $60 each and you have 16 of them. Don't ask me how I know that.

If you need a cylinder head however... I happen to have one in prime condition, complete with all the expensive bits. Valves, rockers, springs all where they should be. I'm not giving it away, but I'm sure we can work something out.

They didn't list the cost on the work order - but the head came in with everything attached.
(although they sounded surprised that it did)

I was about 70K when it started and 80K by the time they figured it out.
I've added another 10K with the new head - no issues.
