I need your help!! My turbo (I thought) went out 2 months ago. I was driving and looked in my rear view mirror and saw nothing but smoke. Towed it to my place and pulled the turbo hose off by the intercooler and sure enough there was oil inside of hose and in the intercooler.

I bought a rebuilt one and within a week that one did the something. I talked to a few people and they expressed that rebuilt ones can be hit or miss. So, I got my money back from the rebuilt one and they sent me a Brand NEW OEM Turbo. Installed the new turbo last weekend and seemed to work good until today. I started it to warm it up and about 5 min into the warm-up i heard a sound like airbrakes on a semi truck was set. Started to drive home and started smoking like a Bi&%H again.

When I got home I pulled the hose from the turbo to the intercooler and it was full of oil again. WTF is wrong with this POS. This thing is sucking all my money up!!! I just got the eco tune and trans tune from Green Diesel and can not even drive it!!! I need to fix this thing and get ride of it…. PLEASE HELP….What could be wrong? I checked the oil return and nothing is plugged….. I am at a loss

Any Feed Back would be greatly appreciated

Did you change the oil after the first turbo fail?

check to see if there are flakes of metal in the oil by straining it through a rag, a broken turbo can do that. Not sure wh your turbos are failing.

How many miles on the vehicle, what type of oil have you been using, what codes are you getting?

Let's start with that.....

I have change oil both time after the turbos failed. I change my oil every 4,000 miles and use shell rotella synthetic 5w 40 oil. I only have 64,000 miles on the little jeep. I am not getting any codes at all.

Sorry for venting in my first post, but i am really frustrated!

Not sure what's happening here but you need to give us as much info as possible.

How do you know the turbo is dead again? Is the turbo making a noise, can you see where the leak is coming from?

That "air brakes" sound doesn't really match a blown turbo, does it?

the oil may just be residual oil left over in the CAC hoses from before the tune.

Can you better describe the noise you heard, what area of the engine compartment it derived from.

A good cleaning of the CAC hoses and other connecting parts maybe in order.

Speculating here ..... let's see what the experts say.

Not sure if the turbo really is dead. The vehicle is smoking, oil dripping from tail pipe, and oil in the intercooler. Where would this oil be coming from? If the turbo is not the problem what could be some of the causes for the oil going into intercooler and out the exhaust? Would valve seals do this or rings?

If its not too much to ask, can I could I call you as I'm better at explaining by talking about it rather than typing. If yes, you can pm me.

Did anyone bother to check if the CAC hose was split?

PM also sent. This doesn't smell like blown turbos at all.

Didn't I hear somewhere where that Positive Crankcase Valve puck needing to be changed every 50,000 miles?
If this part fails, positive pressure will blow by lots of oil into the CAC system.

And X2 on the "swish swish" air sound and lots of smoke is a ripped CAC hose doing its thing.

I put new CAC hoses on the jeep about 5,000 miles ago. The last 2 times I changed the turbo out I did the following:

• Cleaned the intercooler out with cascade to get all the oil out. Dried the intercooler out with a hair drier to make sure all water was out.

• Cleaned the CAC hoses out with cascade

• Checked the oil return to make sure it wasn’t plugged

I did notice after I pulled the last turbo off there was oil in the exhaust manifold and also in the down pipe (oil dripping from the tailpipe as well).

As for the “air brake” noise the jeep was idling when this accord and it resembled a release of air of some sort???? I am not in any way saying that the noise came from the turbo.

Let me know if you guys need any other info

Did you check the EGR pipe attachment to the exhaust manifold?

My guess would be the CCV puck as well. Sounds like a split hose too!

If you're still having trouble with the diagnostic after these suggestions, Rich (from this board) and I could probably head over to your location and lend a hand. I'm sure we won't be able to solve your problem, but might be able to help you get more information to share with the real "experts" here on the board.

Let me know.

There are only two sources of oil that could pollute the intake systems CAC hose or intercooler - either the oil seal within the turbo housing, or the crankcase ventilation system. Easiest test is to replace the crankcase ventilation puck and use an EHM hose into a canister to monitor the amount of oil being discharged through the crankcase vent, (remember to plug the inlet on the flexible air intake duct where the crankcase hose was removed). If that doesn't indicate oil discharge, check engine oil pressure, as a defective pressure release valve might be causing too much oil pressure that is leaking past the turbo oil seal.

Good luck!!

I'm for eliminating the puck first from personal experience on a 1996 VW Passat TDI I owned. Puck looksthe same and is from the same manufacturer as the one VW uses.
When the Passat was about 6 months old it started using oil and it showed up in the intercooler. After replacing the turbo the dealer replaced the puck and the problem was solved :SOMBRERO:

But you should also determine the source of the noise whatever sound it makes :|

So to eliminate the puck you can get some 3/4" hose and do a "elephant hose" mod for testing

Also is it possible your over filling the engine oil :?: It only takes 6.3 quarts period and not to the MAX on the stick.

MAX is exactly what it says and does not mean FULL.
It means do not put anymore then this in period
Plus it takes a half an hour after shutting the engine off for all the oil in the engine to run back down and give a true reading.

Guys - I'm not sure why Jeremy hasn't come back on here to update everyone, but a couple of us have spoken with him and from my conversation, I think we might have found the solution.

He IS running an EHM, however - The hose was frozen shut! The most likely scenario then, since our turbo doesn't have a "seal" in the classic sense, is that the oil was unable to re-enter the sump due to the pressure build up, and was forced past the bearings. The sump would have been pressurized from the CCV, and since the return from the turbo just drops into the side of the block... He should be VERY happy that the return line didn't POP from it's slip-socket and drain his oil pan! Obviously, this also shows something: If you wanted to install a centrifuge filter system, doing it on the turbo's return line will NOT WORK, as any pressure in that return line (instead of a simple non-pressure gravity drain back to the sump) will force the oil past the turbo bearings.

The easiest way to visualize what happened is that he inadvertently created an oil-fed bearing packer. Oops. The EHM has since been slit, and he said it ran fine after, and would give it a few days to see what progresses. Personally, I don't think any damage would result from this, as long as the oil stays where it should. His overall oil level was MAYBE a quart low, but he was also going to do a fresh oil change and put in ONLY 6.4 quarts, and mark the dipstick after idling it and letting it settle. He wasn't aware about the dipstick being incorrect.
