Hello all,

So I've been having quite a few issues with my CRD lately. It is due for a Timing belt change, Suncoast TC and I have been having some serious air/fuel problems-CELs, chugging, dead pedal..etc. I do have a Kennedy Lift pump installed and even that is not cooperating. Took the Jeep to the local dealership and they wanted $2400 for a new Timing belt and to install th Suncoast TC and Transgo shift kit. Ugh..

I decided I don't want to deal with all the BS and the high price of Diesel fuel anymore. So I have begun exploring vehicle options. I think I am torn between a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and a Nissan Xterra. I have had 4 Jeeps and I do love them but the Wranglers can't get out of there own way(as for most of the new 6cyl Jeeps), are overpriced and get below average fuel economy. The new Xterras motor is far superior to the Jeep's, a lil better fuel mileage and it is still a pretty capable SUV. I haven't really considered the new Liberty. What are your thoughts?? Any feedback on the 2010+ Wranglers or Xterras??

Having driven the Xterra as a rental vehicle, I can't stand it. The one I had drove like crap and it was not alignment issues.
Too bad we can't get the JK with the CRD option in the land of Freedom and Opportunity :banghead: :banghead: I would be tempted.

The Wrangler Unlimited rear seats are horrible. Worse than the KJ actually. Otherwise, it's a pretty nice vehicle. Keep in mind...the 2011 Wrangler is getting the new Pentastar V6, so power will no longer be an issue. Also, there are 40 million aftermarket companies making parts for the Wrangler. So you'll never be broken down with no parts or expensive parts. The Wrangler is easy to keep on the road.

Having said that...the Xterra is probably quieter and a little more suited for highway use as far as handling, power, refinement, etc.

Xterra. You can't beat it when it comes down to looks, price, power, versatility. I owned one and loved every second of that truck.

Think about repair costs...................

If you think it gets pricey with a CRD the xterra will blow your mind when you have to change front brakes, over 3 hours of labor just to change the front rotors alone. They also have tie rod issues.

Stick with the Xterra. Nissan's reliability is far greater than Jeeps. In order 1 million miles driven over the course of 20+ years in 11 Nissan products I've owned, I've only had one mechanical failure and that was a starter on my 1989 Nissan Stanza. My Xterra was bullet proof and never failed me.

Regular maintenance on any vehicle is expensive if you don't do it yourself. A brake job is easy and you'd be serving your self interest if you learn how to do your own maintenance.

Nissan makes a nice vehicle... I owned one (appeared in F&FII) and we sell them at our Nissan store. Personally I have no use for the brand since they became French-owned in the late 90's and I am still boycotting France since they betrayed us in the early 2000's.... your level or patriotism may vary.

Toyota truck are one of the most reliable on the market, dont mind the bad publicity they get for gas pedal issue on cars, Tacoma receive all awards in the industry and recently receive the 2011 Blue book best resale value. The 4 runner is the close version, same quality, reliability and resale value. Check the resale value of the Xterra, Wrangler, Hummer H3(R) and compare, Toyota win with a good margin.

The answer to your question for "Xterra or Wrangler?" easy...Toyota

Personally I'd go with a TJ/Lt and swap in a V8 or - JK and a Hemi
I'm unimpressed with the V6's

and I'm not a fan of the French - but they were right, we were wrong.

I've been pondering the same question. What would I replace my CRD Liberty with if it were to blow-up on me tomorrow. I would go with the Xterra, just make sure you get the Offroad package. It comes with a rear locker and hill descent control. But this is taking into consideration price. I wouldn't want to spend much more then 20k. If 40K is your limit get the 2011 4runner trail edition. Or even a Jeep Grand Cherokee at that price. And the 2011 Wrangler does not have the Pentastar. From what I have read it won't get that engine till 2013. And maybe by then it will also get the 8 speed ZF transmission. Now that would be a powertrain worth waiting for.

Multiple articles on the net and quotes from CEO, (The Italian Guy), Wrangler in 2012 to have the Pentastar V6. They're doing away with the SMPI V6 engine.

Jeep, I am sure I will get scolded for this but I would but the Jeep, support your country and help make sure your kids (and everyone else) don't work for the Japanese in the Future. That aside, the price for parts and the off road capability of the Jeep isn't even comparable. If you want fuel mileage just get a AWD car.

Buy a Subaru for the road. Most people with SUV's don't really need them and almost never take them offroad. Tip Over Challenge (and the like) eats Toyota CV shafts. That includes T(u)RD's and Xterras. Neither of them will do what a Rubicon will. That is vehicle for the real 'enthusiast.' OTOH, any older Jeep with 2" lift and rear lockers can make it. . . . and they are reliable and not very pricey.

I'm going for another VW TDI. Preferably '03 or older with the ALH.

They were right about what? We were wrong about what? You mean it was right to skim billions from the oil for food program? Please.

I find Toyota's to have no personality. It's an appliance. Fix the Jeep you have and do all of the suggested modifications plus get a part time job in a restaurant that will give you their used cooking oil and covert the Jeep to run on grease. Maybe you should try a Grand Cherokee CRD, has a Mercedes engine. Probably cheaper than the X.

Ever changed the spark plugs on a nissan motor??? When you can't see the plug and its between intake runners on the back of the engine adn you are fishing for a hole to put a plug back in you might curse your decision. I've worked on nissans before, hated it. Only did it for a church vehicle, would never own one. The engines are efficient and powerful for the size, and jeep motors are definately lacking in both areas, but consider everything. Wranglers are much more off road capable and MUCH cheaper to make EVEN more capable. Exterras, with the locking diff options are fairly capable, but still limited on the ground clearance. Also much more expensive to lift a IFS xterra comapred to a solid axle wrangler.

What is the vehicle purpose?

In my opinion you have these basic categories:

Car than can off road occasionally, usually only have a awd or 4high option, no 4 low range- best economy of the 3 classes:
Subaru forrester, Subaru outback, toyota rav 4, ford escape, etc

Suv than can go most places, usually have a 4 low range - medium economy:
Xterrra, 4runner, FJ cruiser, Grand cherokee, Hummer H3, land cruiser, land rover, etc

Off road vehicle that can drive on the road, have the most factory ground clearance and most capability out of the box, but are not the most comfortable or practical daily drivers - economy whats that???:
Jeep Wrangler, Hummer H1, H2

If considering the xterra, I would consider others in thee same category like the FJ cruiser, 4runner, or Grand cherokee. These all have optional lockers or limited slip axles. Personally, depending on teh year, the 2011 GC Overland or FJ cruiser would be my top choice over the exterra but theres a good price gap there depending on year range you are looking in.

- Mark
