Shell Rotella, - Cheaper than Mobil1

I'd use 0w-40 if I could get it at the same price.

Shell Rotella 5W40, very happy with it. Live in warm area, so 0 weight not significant. If I lived in Canada or Alaska I would use the 0W40 in the winter for the slight help at startup.

If I had to put up with -20F to -40F I would use 0W-40 for winter only.
If I lived in a hot climate I would use 10W-30/40/50

On other Diesel engines where I have gone to oil that was too heavy, the oil gets hotter and thins out in a few miles.
If in doubt, install an oil pressure gauge and remove all doubt.

Shell Rotella 5w40 The coldest day without plugging in was -8f and it was setting outside. It started fine.

I've used Shell Rotella 15/40 for over 300k miles in various older VW idi diesel engines with no problems at all,

I used Rotella 5W-40 for over 200k miles in my past 96 Passat tdi wagon and 99.5 Jetta tdi. They were both bought new and never used oil between changes.

So with that in mind the choice was clear, Shell Rotella 5W-40 for my CRD :SOMBRERO:

Oil companies have since reduced the zink level but Rotella has the highest level but I help it with a zink addative :JEEPIN:

Shortly after I bought my CRD I met two other CRD owners who

were both using AMSOIL. Neither were dealers, they just like the

product. So I looked into it and have been using AMSOIL 5W-40

European Engine Oil ever since. Live in upstate NY, the Jeep is

outside and have used the block heater once always starts, even on

really cold days to my surprise. I changed the oil filter at time of oil

change at 25,000 miles using the AMSOIL Absolute Efficiency Oil

Filter number EAO34. I'm a little over 150,000 Mi. and would like

to ad a by-pass filter if I could find a good place for it.

You should always use diesel oil in a diesel engine. MobilOne 0W40 is made for gasoline engines. Rotella 5W40 is a true diesel oil. It is cheaper but always go with a diesel oil in a diesel engine. Mobil makes a fine synthetic diesel oil, Delvac One .

- I change at 6,200 or what ever the evic interval that is close to that is.

Rotella T6 here too. I debated about what to use and asked all kinds of things here when I was just looking at the CRD as a more capable replacement for my Outback. The popular opinion then was Rotella closely followed by Mobile 1 5W40. I chose the Rotella because its cheaper, its a trusted diesel engine oil brand, and its easy to find at Wal-mart and most good auto parts stores or truck stops. I change mine every about every 6,250 when the EVIC say its time.

Blackstone Labs test on my oil after 6,200 shows it is holding up well and the engine is wearing better than average for our engines also they recomended that i could extend oil changes to 8000 miles with no ill effects if i like..... I think I will stick with shell rotella unless I can't suddenly find it any more

I buy the Mobil 1 oil and filter on sale. I wait for the mobil 1 oil / filter combo sale at Advanced auto parts and buy enough for 2 oil changes at a time. Doing it this way brings synthetic oil change costs down to a reasonable rate.

Because the Liberty CRDs came with aluminum oil pans, it’s very easy to overtighten the drain plug. To rule this out and ease oil change intervals in the future, I added a Fumoto drain valve. By simply lifting the lever and giving it a quarter of a turn, you can drain the crankcase without the need for tools.

How did you determine that your oil change interval should be 25,000 miles?

the odd thing i find is that the manual calls for 0w-40 and it doesn't even appear designed for diesels? anyone explain this?

Has anyone looked in the FSM for the EXPORT ones? Here's part of what it says :SOMBRERO:

The research I did when I had my TDI came to this conclusion also. I used to drive a 250 mile round trip to get Delvac 1 from the distributor in Grand Junction. Delvac 1 and plain Delvac are not really closely related. The stuff Racer uses sounds good, though I'll probably stick with T6.

Like Joe said, a lot of miles have been put on small diesels using 15/40 dino. The old guys would never put a spark ignition rated oil in a compression ignition engine.

If I were pulling a trailer during summer daytime high heat, I would go with 15/40. Would also mount some kind of supplemental trans cooler.

I saw 0-40 Mobile Delvac available in a Grainger catalogue. Never actually seen it in a store anywhere though...only 5w40 Delvac.
