This question has been asked a bunch of times ... Yes they will work without a lift but you will get some rubbing. Depending on the lift you get it still might rub some with the smaller lifts. The best way to not get rubbing would be wheels with a lower offset and/or some body trimmer and/or a high lift.

lots have found 245/70/16 is as big as you can go without a lift. And some still get rub with those. I barely fit those without rub on mine.

i went with a 235/75/16 mastercraft at2 from jcwhitney.com and have been happy. i have pretty much no rub... maybe a tiny bit when flexed and turning wheel full lock but can barely tell. I think you will be ok as long as you plan to get a lift on soon.

the guys at the tire shops think they know everything yea when i went to go get my 235/75 all terrains put on they were trying to say they would ride really rough and loud... i said "its a jeep man" its not supposed to ride like a cadillac. And i actually hardly noticed a difference from stockers. they sit a little taller and may have a little more sway to them but they are def not loud or rough.
