Did some searching and couldn't find a definitive recent answer.

I just had to replace a valve stem and sensor on my '08 Liberty and it's not something I plan on ever doing again. Those darn things are expensive. Not to mention they rarely work properly. I'd get the light coming on in cold weather even when there was plenty of pressure in all tires.

I'm wondering what the possibilities are for disabling the TPMS, disabling the light/chime, etc. Anyone found a way to use standard valve stems on a TPMS system and shut off the dash indicator?

Only the dealer can disable the system via the Starscan but good luck getting that to happen. You will get the light on in cold weather because air is a gas, it expands when heated and contracts when cooled. Once your tires come up to temp/pressure the light should go away. If its not going away check your tire pressure and make sure you have enough pressure. The only way around that rise/drop in pressure due to the elements would be to get Nitro Fill in the tires. Nitrogen won't expend or retract due to temperature.

The sensors are a wear and tear item and will go down over time. The odds of them "breaking" is slim to none, it's the battery that dies in them. To protect them the units are fully sealed thus you aren't able to change the batteries and the whole unit must be replaced.

You could have them taken out, and put them in a capped pvc or abs pipe, install a standard valve in the pipe, then put 35 lbs of air in the pipe. This obviously isnt disabling the tpms, but it should make it easier to deal with in your cold climates. I havn't done this myself but heard of others doing it. I would try not to let law enforcement see it though, because it will look like a pipe bomb.

It's illegal to disable a TPMS system and no dealer will ever do it since it's federally mandated to have TPMS on all vehicles sold in the US for '08+ vehicles.You can choose to swap in regualr rubber valve stems and live with the light and chime but could be legal issues with a insurance company if one of your tires fail and you die or kill someone else.

The system is a joke and even the service guys at the dealer joked at how retarded it is that its illegal for them to disable it. I don't need a light/chime to tell me a tire is low, i can tell by looking at them if they are, its not that hard. Lets not forget that the system, atleast on my truck, doesn't even tell you which tire is low on pressure, lol.

tjkj2002 - i don't see any legal issues arrising, simply because if a tire suddenly blows out and causes an accident the TPMS system isn't going to do anything to prevent it.

No but if you run to long and to fast on a low tire it will blow out,the reason for the TPMS system to warn of a low tire.And if said low tire(not flat but low) blows and you injure/kill someone and your/thier insurance company investagates and find missing TPMS sensors your on the hook for all the bills as your insurance will drop you and legally can at that point.
