I changed my thermostat a couple of months ago. I think I lost about 4 liters of fluid in the process. Filled it back up with 50/50 distilled H2O/Zerex G-05 mix.

I did mine too. it took about 2 gallons maybe slightly more of Zerex G-05 and water 50/50 mix. I did not drain or flush the engine block. My coolant looked pretty clean so the radatior was just flushed out and all refilled.

Is Zerex G-05 the coolant everyone uses?

Nick, use the stuff they reccomend for VW's/Audi's. (you can get that anywhere in Europe, dunno if we have Zerex G-05...most of what we can get is premixed)

Or, take of the lower radiator hose and let the coolant drain in a clean bucket. Then you can reuse it again.

The lower left bolt on the thermostat housing is a real short SOB and the exhaust manifold is kinda in the way. Use a small rachet with an extention and a u-joint. Have fun.

Tip: 'glue' the new gasket to the cilinderhead with some grease or vaseline, then you have your hands free to get the new t-stat back on starting with that SOB short bolt.

HOAT : hybrid organic acid technology

It will say that on the bottle. Mostly it's coloured pink. VW has been using it for years. It's specific for engines with an aluminium cilinderhead.

Go to your local parts store and ask for hoat...(I can get it here in the supermarket btw)

Tony.

Buying coolant for VW's in the US is difficult. I think VW is currently at G11 and you get it at a VW dealer. Even the Zerex G5 is not widely available. Luckly one of the largest parts chains in the US has it and that's NAPA :SOMBRERO:

Big box stores like Wal-Mart does not carry it. They all try to push Prestone one size fits all coolant.

You can get to that lower left bolt with a 1/4" drive socket (8mm if I recall) and a "wobble" extension. The wobble extension lets you tilt the extension up about 10 degrees which is enough to clear the exhaust manifold. stoutdog did his tstat replacement recently (see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50940&start=560 - toward the bottom of the page) and I believe he found a 6" extension to be a bit short and used a deep 1/4" drive socket. As noted in his writeup a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter would be handy so you can step up to a 3/8 ratchet as the factory bolt is in there tight.

Good tip also because the gasket bakes on and is a b__ch to get off next time. I used high temperature grease (silicone or white lithium works).

Be careful to purchase "HOAT" (hybrid organic acid technology) and not "OAT" (organic acid technology). The later will cause problems.

thanks for the non Mopar part numbers Nick. Now if only someone would sell them here...

It's like the friggin clutch all over again. The JEEP nazi's here put LUK clutches in a Mopar box and charge you triple the original price.

No way in H can you buy a LUK clutch for a KJ in Spain. So I got mine from Germany. As we do with the T-stats. :goink:

Tony have you ever try http://iberia.crownauto.us/es_ES/c/2000/jeep/ ?
i bought some parts from:http://rdr.crownauto.us/cs_CZ/c/2000/jeep/ for less shipping cost and they are good.
you can also use:http://www.crownauto.us/en_US/continent/02/ for choosing any country in europe(they may have different prices)

I had trouble finding G-05 coolant here in good old Pennsylvania. We have many the Major discount auto parts stores like, Pep Boys, Advanced, and AutoZone, but none of them have it. When I asked about it at those places I was told to use Prestone Universal. I did go look at the jug when the First guy told me that and found that junk is OAT not HOAT like the Chrysler wants. I pointed that out to him and he just shrugged and said that's what we sell for that and it's universal, says so on the label. I just put it down and left. Every other place that suggested that I just said no thanks. Wal-mart had it in my area, I had seen it before but when I want to buy it they didn't seem to sell it any more, all the shelf space replaced with the Universal OAT stuff.

In my area NAPA was the only place I could find G-05. when I called to ask if they knew what I was asking about and had some in stock. they said they always try to stock some and could order it in if they had to.

Another thing is don't buy in to Prestone's universal claims and that its proper because the color is a close match. Color has nothing to do with the chemistry of the product. they can dye it any color of the rainbow and it's still going to be OAT. the Mopar stuff that was in mine looked more orange and the Zerex G-05 is more of a golden yellow amber color. and its the correct formula for Chrysler, newer Ford and most European makes. Even Diesel engine compatibility is mentioned on the label.

I checked the local Pep Boys, Autozone & Kragen, no luck. I once did see it at Pep Boys but not this time. The Pep Boys computer did say the Jeep needed HOAT coolant and they did not carry any. I went to NAPA and they ordered it for me for the next morning.

Been running 50/50 mix of green prestone and water. This will be 2 years this summer and will be refilling with the same. Have had no issues.

Unless you plan on dumping your Jeep in the short run and don't care what happens to the next owner, you're a braver man than I.
