I drove from Tulsa to Roodhouse, IL on Thursday and back Friday(today) and I chickened out and filled the tank @ 804.1 miles using 22.081 gallons. This happened only because of strong quartering tail winds both ways and readily available semis to hide behind. I do not expect this opportunity to present itself again.

When you have a good tail wind and a 65 mph semi in front of you it seems the whole vehicle is a sail. I will give more details when I have more time. Not very often you get almost 800 miles of tail wind.

You must have had some special "mojo" in your tank or it was all downhill.

I got 748 on a little over 19 gallons once. 60mph mirrors folded in on the cruise for HOURS! It can be done.

22.081 gallons into a 20.5 gallon tank.

That's pretty impressive. :-)r The comedy never ends on this forum.

Where's the guy who claims to have gotten 38 MPGs on the interstate? That is all we need to top this off.

I don't know how you guys are getting 39+ mpg on these CRD's, but I've owned mine since new, have taken multiple long trips with it from AZ. to MO. / AZ. to Vancouver B.C. / several trips from AZ. to NO. CA. and I usually drive the speed limit, use cruise control on flat ground. Best I've ever gotten on milage 27.9 with Wife and 2 Chihuahua's on board. Is there a special additive or technique, special tune? Can you share your secret or technique and not claim to get this milage? The rest of us CRD owners sure would like to get mid 30's mpg rather than mid 20's. What brand of diesel are you buying?

It will indeed take 22 gallons up to the neck if the tank is completely empty. I've done it on a number of occasions. I've also gotten 36mpg on a couple of occasions but it can only be done in very heavy, fast moving traffic with a stiff tail wind.

I have put in 22.6 gallons before, the tank is 21.5 gallons according to my build sheet. I once had the EVIC displaying in the lower 50's going 65 MPH sandwiched very tightly between a Fedex double trailer and another semi on the Will Rogers Turnpike. Joe is correct it can be done.

Lots of factors can be used to wring out great fuel mileage. Tire pressure, tire size, weight, good wax job, constant speed, wind resistance, the list goes on and on. Anyone that has drafted race cars understands this. Unfortunately the best race drivers I can think of that do this is NASCAR although several other motorsports do this. I have drafted many times abouve 100mph and it is a really cool feeling to do so. Look how big rigs have developed drafting in their designs over the past 30 years.

Hmm, I posted just before you. Youre math isnt very good! 748 / 19.4 is 38+ MPG. :goink:

No, but even in stock condition, NEITHER of the CRDs I've owned would crack 30 MPGs with the cruise set at 55 all day long. Which is why I have a hard time believing 38 MPG is possible with these rigs.

I agree with what you just wrote but, I once ran to Leavenworth, KS and back with a stock CRD, a tail wind both directions and averaged 32 mpg. Now I am not stock and am drafting. The fact you have not gotten great fuel economy does not mean it can not be done.

Every car and driver is a little different. I average about 30 on the highway, doing 70-75, but have seen closer to 35-36mpg in ideal situations (fresh tank, used immediately on one-stop highway trip, 60mph cruise, flat terrain, tailwind, light traffic, no inclement weather, no AC needed, etc.)

I think we all have to realize that not all engines are created equally. My father has a CRD with the same tuning, yet I can drive his car and not get the same mpg I receive in mine - in identical conditions.

Add on the minor hypermiling that CRDJoe has said he does, and 38 is plausible in the perfect conditions.

I hit 29mpg with lift, armor and Load E mud tires -
only thing special - was slowing down - stayed 60-65 on a fairly flat highway.

So it doesn't surprise me that someone could do better.
