Gringo: can you give me more details on that mount that you're using? What does it attach to? Where did you get it? etc. I'm assuming thats a 3' firestik?

Has anyone tried running a roof/magnet mount antenna, and routing the cable inside through the 3rd brake light? Do you think the 3rd brake light would develop a leak if I ran the coax through there to get inside the Jeep??

I've run a magnetic roof-mount and routed the cable through the front door. It was surprisingly easy to do with the weather stripping, didn't cause any problems.

Thats what I did. $25 at radioshack and I pick up alot of stuff.

Yes, I had to drill pilot holes. I used stainless screws with clear silicone caulk to weatherproof.

You guys said it is pretty stout but that is exactly how I have mine mounted and it has come loose from the body a couple of times. If your wheeling involves going through the woods where the antenna will get caught on tree branches, at the very least get yourself a spring for the mount to reduce stress on it. I am considering the Rock Lizard bumper and if I do get it, a new cb stud mount may be the first mod I do to the bumper.

I agree; the only problem is that mounting your antenna that far down doesn't give you the best groundplane.

Well after six hours I finally got a CB radio installed in my KJ yesterday. This was the most difficult CB radio install I have EVER done...including a Mustang GT and a Camaro. Jeep obviously does not consider accessories when they manufacture vehicles.

Anyway...I mounted the antenna to the cargo basket on top (you could also mount it to the side rails if you wanted). I used a cargo basket mount available from radio shack.

Then I routed the coax down the weather stripping starting at the corner of the rear door and ran it all the way down the weather stripping into the fender, then across into the engine bay. Then through a hole in the firewall (I simply removed a rubber grommet here).

Radio itself is mounted to the passenger side of the console.

The way I have mine done, you can only see 4 inches of the coax (coming immediately off the mount), the rear window is not blocked, the antenna is up high where it should be, the weather stripping will not leak because of a coax running between it and the door, and there are NO holes drilled. I'm very happy with it so far. I hate the amount of time it took...but I'm very happy with it now.

Sometime I will try to get some pics up on my cardomain site.

I haven't had the chance to put a SWR meter on it yet. Will probably do that tonight. (I'm still hunting for a shorter antenna to clear the parking garage at work). But the reception, etc. seems great so far. I expect the SWR to be 1.5 or so. I will see for sure tonight.

Mine is 20'. Thats all radio shack had and i was in a crunch to get my jeep back together. 18' would probably work better.

You can run cabling all the way down each side of the jeep inside. just run under the rear carpet, down next to the rear seat and under the plastic all the way up the front. or you can go up the center console too.

hey vxla, sorry I didn't see ur post til right now. I used the same mount as edwin. The firestik is a 3 footer couldn't get it any longer due to covered carport. I'll shoot some pics of where I mounted the bracket for u. I need to tune the antenna, not getting very good reception.

Looks great; I'll drill this weekend. Any particular size screw? I'll just find some sheet metal screws that fit the holes on the bracket.
