Long story short i broke my arm at work so i have been unable to do my own servicing on my vehicles. So i take my crd to westport auto in westport illinois and they charged me 197.67 for a oil change and fuel filter change. i really thought that was very unreasonable so i told them. of course they tried to back up there price and i got mad. well to shortin it up i was told not to come back for any servicing. what do you guys thank :evil:

Oh, you'd be surprised what a dealership would charge for service and maintenance on a Porshe or Mercedes. Several times what you paid on your CRD.

I hope your arm heals well.

Here the stealership has an enticing three oil changes per year for $150, including syn oil and filters. Not a bad deal in my opinion but be prepared to fend off a sales pitch each visit for a whole bunch of extra work they think you gotta have.

If westport auto is a mopar dealer, ask them how Larry Miller dealership in Albuquerque can do 3X for $150. I bet you can access that deal online, or better yet have them access it online and explain the difference.

6 quarts Synthetic Oil = $30
Oil Filter = $10
Fuel Filter = ??? I think they are about $40

$80 in parts
1 hour labor at $100 an hour

$180 bucks total, sounds about right.

Nothing outrageous about those prices, unless you are expecting them to be a "Not for profit organization"? Could have let the clowns at Jiffy Lube do it for less?

The dealership where I go to have a program called free oil for life; which means if you buy a vehicle from them you get free oil changes. The ONLY thing you buy is the oil filter. All in the end it costs me $7.12 (that's with tax). They even grease my rear joint for free. I get coupons in the mail from them for oil changes and such (from Jeep). Never had the need to use them. Last week they fixed my Jeep for free. The key was locked up in the ignition. I was there for almost an hour too. They're very helpful and nice people. I wouldnt call this place a stealership on the account I've had good business with them.

They are not all Stealers nor do they all set out to be.

Several things make dealers always higher in most cases:

Hourly Labor rates are usually higher than most other shops

OEM parts at retail cost are more $$$ than Napa, Advance or other places.

For us CRD owners some dealers don't have techs that know about servicing them as they have seen few to none and might keep changing parts until they fix it.

My Local dealer has never serviced mine, where I bought it they have before and once after purchasse, they were ok.
The dealer closest to me (Stettler Chrysler Dodge Jeep) has a parts guy that is pretty sharp at what he does and on a few things has even sold me things less than retail. Cool Thing is Dave remembers me by name when I come in and if I see him out in public even says hello. I never would expect that from a parts guy.

Anyway hope the arm heals well for ya. Get an estimate before next time. I still worry about repair costs even now. when I was younger a bill that was more than I planned for ment my good friend Mastercharge had to help.

all 3 of my Libertys go to the local Jeep dealer for oil changes. I bought 2 of them there and they offer free oil changes and their "23 point inspection" for free on all vehicles sold there. (I don't even have to pay for the filter) The third one I didn't buy there and it costs me $30.20. For that price it isn't worth it for me to do it myself because besides changing the oil and filter they lubricate the suspension, steering linkage, trans shift linkage, parking brake cable guides and underbody contact points. Check all the tires, check front and rear brakes, air filter, wipers, and check all the other fluids. Now I know that they check all of this stuff on the hopes of up-selling the needed repairs.

well, i mean...when i asked first time i thought they would charge me like $5 just for doing that.

the best part was the dealership fixing my locked up key for free :BANANA:

Hmmm...didn't know they did this at other Jeep dealerships.

There is a big difference between servicing a gas KJ and a diesel KJ. My dealer sends me coupons all the time for cheap oil changes, free services, etc....but if you read the fine print it says "diesel models excluded". The owners' manual recommended oil for the CRD costs WAY more than the recommended oil for the 3.7, the CRD holds 1.5 quarts more of it too. Filters are also different. Most dealerships are not going to cut you a deal on servicing a diesel.

I was even quoted $150 to change the gear oil in the diffs. once. I laughed and walked away at that one. :ROTFL:

Indeed I knew this which is why I originally didn't post in here but when other gassers started posting, I didn't want to get left out :-)r

FWIW the dealership that I go to will still do the free change on the diesels as long as they were purchased there but if not I am sure it cost a lot more than my 30$. I am taking 2 of the Libs in this weekend so I may ask them how much it would cost on the CRD just for curiosity.

Just remember you bought a vehicle that requires special oil which is not cheap and not in any shop as bulk for cheaper prices.Something to blame on yourselfs for not thinking of maintenance costs before buying.

Sure my gas KJ only takes 5qts of oil but all said and done it costs me $12 to do a oil change on my KJ using 5qts of Mobil1 extended performance 5w30 and Mobil1 filter,and yes I buy the oil and filter at full retail price and also pay labor to change my oil.

yeh but there they know what they are doing. Mechanics break stuff there it comes out of THEIR pocket and it ain't cheap.

Just because they work at at a high end car dealership means nothing as the quality of the techs.It's the customers who change as the more expensive the vehicle is the cheaper they are.Also most of those high end vehicles spend more time in the shop then driving from cheap owners.

Which is why I do my own service. A gallon of synethetic Shell T6 is $19.95 at Walmart. A Purolator filter is $5-$10 bucks depending on which one you get at Advance. And it takes 5 minutes to pop the new filter on while the oil is draining and then refill the crankcase. Service is a non-issue for me.

And for the OP, it would be a non-issue too. The onlly reason he went to the stealership is because he's currently injured and unable to do it himself.

I was going to say this but any Oil change place worth anything should be able to preform the basic CRD oil change. I prefer to do my own but this winter it was due to be changed and with No garage of my own, and stone driveway, snow on the Ground and it being freezing cold I was not doing it myself then. I got my own oil and filter and an NTB coupon. Took it to the NTB that always did my old Subies, Talked to the guys, explained the Fumoto valve and how much oil went in since they never did one before and they did my change for me no problem at all.

So it cost me for the oil at Walmart, a pure One filter and $16.99 at NTB that even got the tires rotated. They didn't care it was a diesel or not they charged me the same price as a gasser because I provided the oil. I'm sure it was cheaper than his dealer visit.

The Dealership close to me that I have gotten parts from started sending me coupons for service. offers like, Lube oil and filter for Diesel engines $20 off or Fuel filter change, Diesel only $10 off. I have yet to take them up on any offers so far.

now i know why they call them a stealership
