Hi yall. I have been noticing a problem with my ac in my 04 kj. For maybe a year i will be running the ac and it will be cold and then all of a sudden it will stop. I turn on the heat and it seems like it thaws out. I turn back on the ac and works fine. Only does that on long road trips. Well this weekend, the ac was working fine on the way to our destination. 3 hours away. well on the way home it was working but stop blowing cold. turned it off and ran windows down. Checked out yesterday i turned it on the engine made a loud roaring noise. after 10-15 seconds it would stop. I noticed some brownish like specs on the alternator, the fan cover and on various parts on the engine. I was not oil. I would not rub off and the oil level was fine. Have not checked it yet, but I beleve that the pulley on the compressor is not rotataing and the belt is just running across it and creating friction. I believe that the substace found on the engine could be fragments form the bet.
**Not sure. But just my take on it.. I could really some feedback as to what this could be. Thanks so much.

If your compressor pulley did seize up, it would burn the belt up. You would have a lot of smoke coming from the engine bay!! It could be going out though. You can take the belt off and turn the compressor by hand to feel if it turns hard or has any rough/grinding spots. It should turn easily if there are no issues. I know several people have had their's go out.

I haven't had mine go out personally, but alot of people end up replacing the clutch on the compressor. I looked up a clutch on www.wholesalemopar.com and they have a clutch for $211.75 (2004 with 3.7L). I'm sure you might find a better deal if you shop around. If it's the whole compressor than it runs $433.18 (same site). Hope this helps.

Computer security won't let me open the link. Not sure what a shop would charge. They all have different hourly rates. :juggle: It would also depend on weather or not the shop would have to recharge the AC system. They shouldn't have to recharge the system if it's just the clutch. I would guess that it would be 1-2 hrs of labor. :2cents:

Well took it up the family mechanic and he said it is the compressor. Well if it aint 1 thing its another. He will not just replace the compressor, he does it all the way. New everything. He said he can do new everything compressor, condesor, hoses, I mean every new part and installation out the door for $905.83. Not bad for all that. I guess.

On a KJ you must replce the whole line to change the orifice tube.

And yes if replacing the compressor you must replace the reciever/dryer,orifice tube, and condensor(if built after 1991) to keep the warranty on the new compressor.

There is a sticker under your hood that lists that information.

Hope this is not a shade tree mechanic doing the work in his/your garage unless they have the required tools to do AC work. You can not "vent" R134A,must be recovered properly by a machine since it has been found it's a destructive as R12 is to the ozone layer.

Thanks. Na this guy knows what he is doing. He went to nascar school and was a motor mechanic for a NHRA dragracing team. Granted they dont have ac's in either. haha. He has all the required tools and has done several ac's before. Thanks though.
