So I'm halfway to work and my wife calls and says her '02 Liberty won't start. I turn around and go all the way back to the house, figuring its a dead battery. Turns out it will crank, but it won't start. I didn't have much time to diagnose, so I just took her to work and plan on digging deeper this evening.

It's acting like a fuel problem, since it will sputter for a few seconds and then die. I applied some throttle a couple times when it sputtered and it revved for a second but then died again immediately. This tells me it has at least some spark.

Does anyone know what the fuel pressure specs are? I searched but couldn't find anything. I have a gauge and can test it at the rail. I also have a scantool and will hook it up tonight to see if it says anything.

Do these things have any sensors that are notorious for going out, like a cam sensor or anything? The thing ran like a top yesterday, so any help is appreciated! Oh, it's a 3.7L auto 4WD.

Howdy orangecrushed Welcome to LOST

I'd still be looking at the battery.
on these beasts having the current to crank over the engine is not the same as having the voltage to turn on the computer - the starter may turn - but if the computer's not on - it won't start.

you'd need a stress test on the battery to confirm/deny.

and it's a toggle switch - it the computer wants 12.0 V and you have 11.9 - it won't turn on.

Hey, thanks for the response. Didn't realize that was my first post...I guess I set up the account awhile ago to research something but never actually posted anything.

Anyway, you were 100% correct. I read that on another forum and that caused me to vaguely recall that it did something like this during the first battery replacement (we've owned it since new, and this is battery number four at 108k miles, which is average for AZ). I threw a battery at it and all is well. Because of the weird battery size, I've never been able to find a good battery for it in a timely fashion. This time I actually found a place with an Optima in stock that would fit in the battery tray with no issues this time around, so I'm pretty happy about that!

Coincidentally, for anyone wanting to know, the proper fuel pressure for am '02 with a V-6 is 49.2 psi. It was (thankfully) spot-on!

Red, actually. Yellow or blue was not an option with the weirdo size.
