I bought my 2005 Limited CRD last year with 70,000 miles on it. It had its first emissions test last year and passed with a 4.5 opacity reading with a 20.0 opacity standard.
I was introduced to LOSTJEEPS.Com and discovered the Noob Guide. I replaced the air filter with a K&N, replaced the fuel filter and the map sensor (it was so dirty), changed the oil to Amsoil, about 40% bio diesel and replaced the boost hoses to Samco's.
The CRD passed this week with an opacity reading of 2.1 for 2011.

K&N air filters are very prone to damage due to the way they are made. You have to be extremely careful when you clean them and hold them up to the light to inspect for pin holes that can dust out your engine fast. The best thing you can do with a K&N if you plan to use it is to follow a combine or cotton harvester to put a little fuzz on the media to help protect your engine.
Amzoil & AFE make great air filters that flow like K&N but are not damaged as easy.
Amzoil dealers are weak in y area, so I put in the top of the line AFE ProGuard 7, works great, much better than stock.

I have read either you like or dislike K&N air filters on LOSTJEEPS.COM. I'll look into those other filters.

I used to be a K&N user on my old Jetta Turbo Diesel until I saw light coming through from pin holes. I was a lot of work to massage the K&N to not have the pin holes. When I got my CRD, I switched both my CRD from stock and Wife's TDI that had a K&N over to to AFE ProGuard 7.

You are supposed to clean the K&N with a solution and let it air dry before you oil it. If you use an air hose to blow it dry of course you could blow a hole in it. It as simple as following the directions that comes with the filter.

OMG !!! A person does a lil' readin' 'round here, probably listens to a few opinions around here, makes some simple mods and HOLY MUNCHKIN CRUD ! Reduces the tailpipe emissions by more than HALF !! Why does it seem the local waterboard committe is being awakened? I betcha fuel mileage is better now too( but not a really, really large amount 'cause I'm thirty years into a losing lottery streak ). I say "a tip 'o the derby to ya" sca2, fer a job well done ! Carry on I say !

For those of us who remember when Mount Saint Helen erupted K&N boosted only vehicles with their filters didn't have clogging problems  This might sound good untill you think about why K&N filters didn't clog might be because the volcanbic ash went right through them :dead:

Don't mean to step on toes ( I have big feet ) but if K&N was that bad of a product, methinks they would have gone out of business a couple of decades ago.

I used K&N in a few of my previous cars. Nissan Maxi ma and 2 Subaru's I thought they were fine and if you don't see any holes in them you might be ok. I switched to the Amsoil filter when I came here prior to buying my CRD. its was highly recommended and easier to care for than the K&N.

So far I prefer the Amsoil Filter over the K&N. its cheaper and you just clean it with a shop vac every oil change and its good for up to 100,000 miles. no careful washing, waiting to dry it, and no messy oil or the risk of using too much oil.

Ya, plus the K&N does such a poor job of filtering air you might as well just pull it out and drive around without an air filter.

Me and my brother found that a 1981 Honda Civic he was driving as a teenager had no air filter in it. he was driving it like that for months and who knows how long before he got it, it was sans filter. That thing ran like a top but that was before Fuel injection and all the tight tolerances that vehicles have today. I sure would never try that now unless I was driving it to the scrap yard.

K&N = more air flow for performance but I now don't use them now for worries over less filtration. They MAYBE fine for gassers but I think our engines pull more air and if you priced an injector or a turbo you would want to keep as much dirt out as you could. But if you like the K&N, don't want to switch, believe in the product or what ever use it. I just don't want to pick a fight here. filters and oils start the biggest debates here.

The previous owner of my Libby put a K&N in it and I cringe every time I have to drive through any dust clouds!!

Where are you guys getting the "AFE Proguard" and what is so special about them?

sca1- Pretty cool that the collective here has managed to steer so many of us in the right direction!! Cleaner emissions and better reliability, longevity and mileage are the benefits!! Gotta love it. :!: :!: :!:

Long ago we had to use the Thomas Register Catalog from the Public Library and do research to find stuff.
Now days we have a great invention that helps both us common folk and the CIA find stuff, its' called:
GOOGLE
Using Google, I went to the AFE Advance Flow Engineering site, got the model number for my CRD filter and my wife's TDI filter.
Then I used Google to locate the AFE dealer who had the best price, presto magic, I typed in my Credit Card info, name and address, and it was in a box when I got home. I removed both filters from the box and installed them in both the CRD and TDI with out consulting the FSM manuals.
WOW

Hope this helps. :)

The AFE Progard exceeds the warranty requirements of companies like Cummins.
Needless to say, K&N does not.

AFE and Amzoil will flow as much air as K&N minus one thing:

DIRT

Sorry to twist your PANTIES in a knot. I guess I should have phrased it "DO you (the collective at LOST) have a preferred vendor for this product?" I try to support those vendors that support members here or contribute to the cause. GOOGLE is all well and good, but sometimes its nice to hear fromFRIENDS.

Gotta say what you mean, none of us are clairvoyant
My briefs were not in a wad, I was laughing the whole time I typed.
In fact I was laughing so hard I pressed some of the wrong keys on the keyboard and had to correct my typos. :ROTFL: :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

I do get frustrated with Newbies who ask for hand holding instead of technical advice.
Sorry, my Graduate degree is not in Psychology.

True there are some good vendors who support LOST and some vendors who act aloft do not get my business.

Notice on how none of the LOST supporting Vendors are Mopar dealers :?: :?:
