Hello:

This morning I went to the Jeep dealer to upgrade the ECU of my KJ 2.8 CRD year 2006.
I wanted to upgrade ECU from .....AF version to .... BB version (resolve problems with glow plug overheating and FCV failure).
The mechanic told me that, after erasing the old version and meanwhile installing the new version, the communication with the ECU failed and he couldn't neither recover the old version nor installing the new version. It's Saturday, so till Monday he won't be able to to anything. He can't start the KJ; It doesn't recognize the VIN!!
The mechanic told me that the KJ model 2006 has a ECU communication bus a little "special"; not the same as 2005 model year and not the same 2007 model year (the upgrades with that bus are very slow, and have to be done with the dealer computer of the 2007 model year).
On Monday, when he'll spoke to the area manager of Chrysler, he'll phone me with a solution (I hope), but I'm afraid that the solution will be replace the ECU with a new one, but I'm not sure if I'll have to pay anything (it isn't my fault; I didn't failed the upgrade and my car worked well this morning!!).
Has anybody suffered or heard of a similar case?
I think is an specific fault of KJ 2006 model year.

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

Sounds fishy to me. I replaced my 2007 ECU with one sent to me from GDE (with the ECO tune loaded, and it was an obviously older hardware version) and it ran just fine. When I asked GDE about using an obviously older firmware set they advised there were no differences between years in the firmware. It would be a good idea to get GDEs take on this, cause it sounds to me that they stuffed up the VIN loading or something simple.

They should charge you for the Flash, but not for a new ECM if they cooked it, that is what Garage Liability Insurance is for. When I had a shop, it was required, I don't see how a Dealer can be with out it.
All the Encryption crap Chrysler and the other companies have to go through is due to Gooberment Regulations. ECM system would be simpler and much more reliable if all the ECM had to do was run the engine as it was designed and programmed to do.
I suspect that if it happened during the work week, Chrysler would have sent the magic and you would have never found out about it.

Thanks you two for the replies...
Warp2diesel, I agree with you; I think if it had occurred during the week, probably I'd have never konw about it.
I have no problem to pay the software upgrade (that's I went to the dealer for), but I think I don't have to pay for a new ECU.

I don't Know if this ECU upgrade failed is a problem with all KJ 2.8 CRD year 2006, or it's only a problem with mine.

Thanks.

Since the flash stuff comes through the internet, I suspect it is due to a lot of web/browser/security/software upgrades and something has not yet gotten caught up. I could not file my expense work account for three weeks due to web related brain farts with my Mozilla browser, still doesn't work with that program and have to use IE. There is also a V6.24 Java related brain fart causing problems with some software and I have to stay with V6.23 Java for now. My son had to get out of bed very early due to a Firewall server problem with the company he works for. That bug could have screwed up Chrysler's firewall too and left your ECM code in the dust. It all could be due to some Hacker trying to get access to some super rich dude like George Soros's bank account and screwing up Chrysler's server instead. Don't get me wrong, the inconvenience you are having with your CRD means much more to me and the rest of us than the Self Proclaimed Scholar of Lucifer loosing his billions to some hacker(S). :)

Not easy to follow Warp Squeeto! Imagine if ever get elected gouvernor! Remove the P of is nick :ROTFL:

Back on the subject: Your DC just get burn in the stupid update process of DC. They have to dowload the software update direct to the ECM and if the connection fail the ECM is toast. Now They need to send back your core to DC and put a refurbish in your truck no charge. Dont get scam...A ECM work or dont work there is no middle status. You get there with a perfectly working unit , they screw up they have to pay! End of the story.. :|

It most likley failed because the battery got below a specified voltage. There are exact instrucions about keeping a battery charger on it while flashing and making sure the battery voltage is correct before starting the flash.

Back in 06 when we had a flash of the week there were many locked up that way :dead:

OK, thanks...

At present day, I have no car.
They can´t access the ECU to reprogramate it. The're going to try accesing it through another ECU.
I'm getting tired of this. Finally, I think they'll have to replace the ECU but I think is a money issue between the dealer and Chrysler...

Hello:
Finally, the ECU had to be replaced, and I haven't had to pay anything.
The new ECU has version number 05187221AB, and mine had 56044773AF.
I'm a little confused; which car model fits the new ECU? (mine is KJ 2.8 CRD manual 2006 year).

Thanks in advance.

Daniel

The new part number 05187221AB is for a 2007 KJ CRD. Surprised they flashed this in your 2006 CRD. Fairly sure the EGR valve changed from electric to vacuum for 2007 CRDs in Europe and elsewhere. The dealer should check for codes even if there is no CEL on, maybe something in the background is stored as a fault. But if it runs fine, then go with it.

Thanks for your answer...
I agree with you (I've been searching for the ECU number in Internet and I've found that it's a 2007 model year). I've noticed (for instance) that the behaviour of the FCV has changed; now when I switch the engine off, I can heard an electric buzzing for 10 seconds, and at the end the valve closes very slowly. With the old ECU, in 3 seconds after switching the engine off, the valve closed with a thick noise.
I'll return to the dealer this week because I've no cruise control and I've no alarm, and with the old ECU I had both of them.
I don´t know if it's a programming issue or isn't it....

Thanks very much.

Daniel

...and what's more. The KJ 2.8 CRD 2006 has ceramic glow plugs (7 volts), and 2007 has metalic ones (5 volts)...but mine starts perfectly....with ceramic glow plugs and a 2007 ECU...

With tune for 5 volt glow plugs, it will not hurt the ceramics, but they will be underpowered, so if it gets very cold you will most likely have starting issues.

The alarm works fine; I had forgotten that you have to wait for 30 seconds after locking the doors...
The only issue is the cruise control. I don't know if there is some error code pending in the ECU that inhibits the cruise control (there is no CEL light).

The dealer "forgot" to tell the ECU to enable cruise when they programmed it. A not uncommon problem :banghead: which does seem rather silly when all you have to do is look at the steering wheel to see if the Jeep has cruise. I had a similar problem on a Dodge D-250 when the dealer "forgot" to tell the system I had remote door locks, duh. It's their fault and should be fixed at $0.00 cost.

There are some reports on Ghosts hanging on with repeated flashing of ECMs and TCMs and causing problems.

All I am trying to get across, is that you need to be very critical of the functions and anything that is lost, just in case your ECM gets spooked. If all checks out OK, you are still OK.
So, shove the Election Microscope into the Dealers back side and take a good look before you let him off the hook. You are doing a good job so far, keep it up.

With engine running, press the cruise on/off button for 4-5 seconds, does the cruise light turn on under the odometer? If so, the CC just learned and should function. If not, a DRB is necessary to 'reset' the cruise feature.

Thanks very much; I've tried to press the cruise on/off button for 4-5 seconds (engine running and driving), and it doesn't work. Tomorrow I'll go to the dealer and ask for a 'reset' of the cruise....
