I am deleting my original question because I should have searched the topic first. Sorry guys...my bad.

But I do have a new question. I went to a shop today to get a price and he recommended 16%. It was pretty light. He said PA law says 70% light needs to come in. He flipped through the book a bit and showed me 20, 25 and so on...the higher the number, the darker the tint...so I am confused when you guys are saying 35. Is 35 the % of light that comes in?

So Elt...if I read yours right...your front are darker than your back?

Forgive my ignorance please.

Probably 35%. In MA 35% is the legal limit, anything lower in number is too dark. I have 20% in all the back windows and 35% on the 2 front doors.

Everyone's tint is going to vary because of the laws in each state. My front windows are very dark I think 15% (meaning only 15% light comes in. You can barley see in my front seats during the day and you really can't see in at night. My work truck is at 10%. Hold the tint up to your windows and see what you like best. It's all going to be up to you and how dark you want it.

i've been tinting for 10yrs... he's my opinion and advice...

first: your tint guy is wrong. close, but wrong. he was backwards in his numbering. tint is measured by Total Visible Light that passes through. 35% tint = 35%TVL, 50% tint = 50%TVL. etc. so the HIGHER the number, the LIGHTER it is.

2nd: the front windows on Jeeps "usually" have a UV coating from the factory. not sure about yours, but my '07 meters 74%TVL with NO TINT on it at all, just the factory UV coating (i bought the same meter that the state troopers use, so i know). so when you add tint to it, the TVL needs to match your states laws, usually +/- 3%. so your tint guy was suggesting 16% tint, but he probably mean 85% tint. add the 85% to the factory UV coating and you'll probably be a touch under that legal 70%. (i put 50% tint on my fronts, and it meters at 41%)

but you are right, and 85% tint is extremely light!!

personally, i like 35% tint on front windows. but becuase my girl works at the sheriff dept, we went with the 50% to play it a little safer. we're still illegal at 41%, the WI state law is 50% on the front, but putting anything lighter on is rediculous if you ask me.

like mentioned, go with what YOU think looks good.... here's some things to think about that may help you decide what tint to get.
1. do you care if you get a ticket? if not, then get whatever you want. if you DO care... then read on...
2. how much is the ticket (WI is $180 fine)
3. ask your tint shop how many cars they remove illegal tint from becuase the driver got ticketed.
4. ask the shops opinion on legal vs illegal tint (they do a LOT of tint, and probably hear/see a lot on this subject, i do!)

just a few things to consider. good luck! hope this wasn't too confusing.

Slippery, everything Devlish said is the conversation I had with my tint installers. Great points to consider. I went with the 35 percent on the front door windows which in Ohio is just below legal (50%) but still not enough to match the rears. Didn't want to draw too much attention from our hard working public servants. Still light enough to see easily through at night.

Here's a shot after the tint was added a couple months back.
