I have watched the sump tank and bled the top vent valve on the radiator several times. I did see some air early on but none after a few days. I reached the 215 degree mark by dragging my boat up a steep grade really pushing my CRD. When under normal load them temp is less than 176 since my thermostat is defective. It was 94 here yesterday and I did the boat pull again REALLY pushing the CRD. I almost made it to the first red tick (~234 f on my gauge) but I could not push the CRD hard enough to make it. Finally did over heat my tranny so I gave up for the time being. Since I am in Austin, TX it won't be long until we see 100 f and I can test it again. When the t-stat temp was at +215 f the air moving through the radiator was about 90 f, not quite hot enough to trigger the fan. I thought about blocking my radiator and having another go , but I want the engine to cool when the fan kicks in and if it is blocked I think the temp will continue to go up, fan or no fan.

Thanks for all the help, I do appreciate it. I will close out this thread when I get a good test on my fan clutch. I expect it to work just fine, but we will see.

Did your transmission overheat light come on? I have never had mine come on and I do not remember anyone reporting their trans light coming on. I wonder what it takes to overheat the transmission and if the warning light comes on and I back off will there be any damage?

Hayden got back to me that the 2905 fan clutch is a "severe duty" unit (they have 3 grades) and the engagement temp is supposed to be between 170 and 190 degrees F. That should be perfect for my situation towing in hot weather and probably for other folks on this thread, as well. At about $60, it is less than half what I paid for an OEM replacement unit two years ago.

Tranny over temp light did not come on. It just started shifting hard, that is I would have to let off the gas to get the tranny to shift. As soon as things cooled down a bit the tranny went back to shifting as normal. I was REALLY pushing the CRD HARD trying to get the engine temp up to 235 - 240 so I was seriously abusing the tranny.

One interesting thing did happen, my fuel miles on the computer dropped from a normal around town of 22 to 24 all the way down to 16 to 17. I did not get to check the computer against the hand calculated mileage. I cleaned the MAP and bled the fuel filter. There was a bit of air in the fuel filter and the MAP looked pretty good. It has been about 3500 miles since I cleaned it and I did the ORM and EHM mods at the same time. I filled up the CRD to start a calculated fuel mileage assessment but after about 10 to 15 miles of driving the computer mileage was right back up to mid 20's again. I am guessing the MAP was fouled a bit. I cleaned the h*ll out of it when I cleaned it because I thought it was probably damaged but maybe not.

Wife's not wives, just wishful (psychotic) thinking I guess.

Thanks for all the assistance on fan clutch. I guess I could just put one of these Hayden heavy duty ones on to help with cooling while towing or just go to a fixed, full time fan. Would effect highway mileage but probably wouldn't decimate city mileage too bad. Anyone have a comparison with fixed vs no fan? My present fan is almost no drag, it will be interesting to see if it kicks in when I get the CRD hot enough. I guess I could use a heat gun, anyone tried that?

There are several stories especially in the trip report section and 4x4 section about trans light. In fact just this past winter I did a write up "An eff u to the Jeep gods" in which I chronicled my snow rally through the west desert and photos of where I stopped until the trans temp light went out. Also there was mention of it in the LJS 09 in Ouray thread when trans temp lights came on due to the high altitude and not keeping in 4Lo.

There's a whole LOST world beyond these CRD walls you know.

Turbobill the link to kapalczynski's fixed fan kit is at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=51618&hilit=fixed+fan . I do not recall if he posted any pre vs. post mpg data but if not you could PM him now before his pending move to Australia sometime this fall. I've got all the parts for the kit but have not yet installed it so I have not mpg data.

Turbobill, I agree with the folks suggesting that the combination of known bad thermostat and fan clutch are likely the reasons for your problem. I had an overheating problem myself towing a full-height travel trailer a couple years ago that was solved by replacing both thermostat and fan clutch.

Towing that trailer is like towing an 9 foot diameter parachute. Going uphill when the temperature got over 95 sent my temp gauge soaring. Fan clutch only kicked in twice, both times when the gauge hit the last mark before the red line. The new clutch kicks in just after the temperature hits the 3/4 mark, and brings the temp down nicely. I dragged the trailer across northern plains and over the Rockies, having problems all the way with running hot. In Oregon I got the parts ordered and got them installed in LA, and had nary a problem going back across the Rockies, through Death Valley, past the Grand Canyon and back east in temperatures over 100.

NATURIST, did you replace the fan clutch with a stock clutch or a Hayden replacement?
