I've had Jeeps with lockers in the past and am a big believer.

Looking for other's real-world experience off-roading only using ESP to decide if it is worth it to get lockers or not. I have no doubt the lockers are better, but realistically, how much better?

I love hitting Moab and jeep trails in the mountains while on long road trips. Is the ESP up to the task (applying brakes to get equal power distribution in low-traction situations etc.)

How well does ESP work real world?

Thanks!

I've wheeled from coast to coast from the highest altitudes of CO to the deserts of UT and the door-handle deep swamps of FL and I never installed a locker.

The biggest problem with wheeling a KJ is ground clearance. When I got stuck, 9x's out of 10 it was because I got hi-centered or sank down to the frame. I couldn't justify the expense of a locker that would've helped me that one time. Not that I'm against lockers, it just didn't make sense for me.

You'd probably get more responses if this was posted in the 4x4 section since this isn't really CRD specific.

Where lockers may be needed is where you b=a=r=e=l=y mash the go pedal cause thats where all the torque is at - you bet this is CRD related...
Done lots of wheeling too and even talked to an ARB authorized outfit about lockers and when I sided with the TC/ABS/BAS elements still working while in 4LO he can only counter with "well lockers are better cause they have been used for years and he even has installed them on D30's front pumkins on JK's with ESP."
Unless I am incorrect our ESP on 2006 KJ is unique, more enhanced, since the ABS and Gyro and BAS and TC are working with a Bosch 16 ECU and that is not the case on JK. And I do not care that an older, say 80's GM product like a K5 did better with lockers. My ARB salesman did not really respond other than "lockers are better".
The ESP type elements working while in 4LO are real apparent when 1 wheel gets in the air like going over a radical rut i.e.-- with a real light touch on the go pedal (watch tach to hover around 1800-1900 RPM)- that wheel starts clicking (ABS braking and releasing) and diff is sending power to the wheel that is on the ground.
Thats as good as a locker to me!
Man do not overdo it, (when you can hear the turbo really start to spool up) as you can grenade the D30A real quick!

Sorry... not CRD related.... and I've never grenaded a diff in the many miles of KJ offroad... MOAB is my backyard.

Here I am in bumper-deep snow bashing my way down the trail in the west desert. I have bald MT tires up front and good street tires in the rear.

not an ESP issue
but the only Liberty that's managed to grenade both the front and rear diff's
was AZScout's CRD

Where are your tire chains?
