Galvanizing

Has anyone thought or had anything metal, galvanized?

I was wondering how well that would protect metals but also what could the costs be?

As far as price goes, I would think it will be expensive if you are looking to get 1 or 2 pieces dipped. I have had past experience with a couple of platers, the price drop tremendously when the part quantity goes up. Most places like that are looking for bulk. I just found this place, http://www.caswellplating.com/kits/index.html, they sell do it yourself plating kits. You can also try Zinc or Black Ox plating, these hold up well to corrosion also. Black Ox plating is easy to do, just dip the part in a couple of solutions and you are done. Hope this helps.

Don't you mean galvanizing?

I just got a reply back from the company. Copy and past the reply:

Dear Mr. X, (makes me mysterious like Racer X)

The galvanized rails & sliders should perform very well. The initial zinc & iron alloy layers to form in the galvanizing process are actually harder than the base metal, providing excellent abrasion resistance along with the ultimate in corrosion protection. The blocked, hollow areas of your fabrication would require vent and drain holes in order to process. Our minimum charge for galvanizing is about $135.00 with tax, which would galvanize approximately 300 lbs of this type of material. I am including some pdf files to better explain the coating as well as the vent/drain holes. Good luck.

If anyone wants a copy of the 30 page pamphlet on everything you wanted to know about Galvanizing, pm me and I'll send it.

If you get some people together and do about 4 sets of sliders or 2-3 front/rear bumpers, you could save a lot of money and get this awesome process completed.......if there is a factory near you.

You can get galvanzied steel painted also so you won't have that shiny bling look....unless you wanted it.

No rusting of your sliders or bumpers....even when you scrape the metal.

It's my understanding/recollection of galvanizing that it somewhat weakens the material. Maybe the surface is harder, more abrasion resistant, but the strength of the structure (bending/crush resistance) would be less. Could be wrong! Happened before...
