Aussie Locker... who's got one?

First of all, I don't want any stories about how I need to drop $1,200 on an ARB air locker, or $700 on a Detroit. Money doesn't grow on trees at my house. Thanks. :wink:

So who has an Aussie Locker? I have run the Aussie in a ZJ and it worked GREAT...but it was pretty noisy in turns. It sounded like a roller coaster as it climbs the first hill... CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK. You know? Otherwise I loved it. I also ran a Powertrax No-Slip and it worked just as well...and it was QUIET...but it was expensive!

I was wondering if anybody is using the Aussie in a KJ, and is yours loud in turns?

Digger had one in his KK,blew up on him after 1400 miles.Aussie knows they have a bad design and actually pulled it from production for the 8.25 for a long time.I'd be wary on using one.

i had one.. used it for 20k miles in my 6 speed KJ. wasnt doing much wheeling and my interest has kinda gone toward sports cars.. so i removed it and sold it to a fellow LOST KJ'er. I do miss having a locker though.. sucked going through winter without it. Wish i would've spent a few more dollars and bought a detroit tru trac.. i still would've have posi with great road manors... but i went the $300 route and now have no locker

the aussie was a beast though! and i had no problems with it besides the road manors.

Have one,love it. Does it click,pop,jerk? Darn tooting! All the time? NO. It is fun to hear experts tell me how my rear end is broke. Will it last forever? Don't know.Would I buy another? Heck yeah!! I am in Frankfort, If you want to hear it,drive it. Wear old cloths, mine is a Jeep 4x4,not a show car.

had one in my jk since the day they were available had 0 issues with it and i beat the hell out of it long as you take care of the rear end and change fluid and grease it up a little every 15k miles should be good to go

What about in the front axle? I'm a bit confused on the lockers...

Will an Aussie locker pop and click in just 2WD when installed in the front? Or is just in 4WD?

I'm more interested in installing in the front axle, but not interested in a rough ride on the way to work...

Think in the front a Tru-Trac would be a better choice. I suppose you could put most any lunchbox in there as the carrier is D30.

I still haven't pulled the trigger on the Aussie yet. But if I tear into my rear diff soon hunting the source of my vibration (if I keep the KJ), I will go ahead and put the Aussie in there while I'm at it.

I have factory Trac-Lok so I will have to tear everything out and replace it with an open carrier to do the Aussie. It won't be a 15 minute job like it was on my ZJ.

Locker in the front unless it is selectable is not a good idea. Lockers by their design are locked and unlock to turn, etc. If you live in an area where you get ice and snow you will find yourself going straight when you want to turn as the locker will not release. In addition, you could have housing issues because of the stress and axle breakage issues.

Put in a limited slip like the Tru Trac or a selectable locker like the Eaton E locker or ARB and you will be better off.

Ooooooh the E Locker looks AWESOME. I think I'm leaning more towards that. Be sweet front and rear. I like ARB, but I don't like the added cost of the compressor and air lines and stuff. Plus I hear people talking about leaks in their lines and breaking the lines. The E Locker looks maintenance free, mostly. I love the idea of just turning it on too.

I don't think that they make one for the Chrysler 8.5" (rear on Liberty), that is why I did a Detroit in the back, which by the way works very well. I believe it(Detroit rear) is the single best improvement for off road over any of the other things I have done.

E Locker in the front really works well for me. Let's you hang with the big boys a little better. I have gone where I never thought the Liberty could take me.

How's that Detroit affect driving on the street daily? I know the normal clicking and stuff but is it as bad as some people make it sound?

Yes, that is the set up I have, Detroit rear and E Locker front. You kind of get what you pay for with lockers, my friend can attest as he put in a lunchbox locker and it has really nasty street habits. The Detroit in our Liberty is very civilized on the street. Acutally, the Liberty is my wifes grocery getter (she is the Granny in Grannysgoat) and she doesn't even notice that it is there. The only time you hear much of anything is after a turn it will click to relock and also we get a little tire chirp now and then when someone has a lead foot. I don't think I have seen anything on the forum complaining about a Detroit. Always possible of course. You will be looking at about $2,500.00 all in for both.
