^^ this.
I refuse to let my wife's "badgering" about my spending $$ on parts and toys to get to me. I look at it like this, every month...
mortgage == paid
daycare == paid
utilities == paid
credit cards == paid in full
all the important stuff is always taken care of. she gets to get her hair done every month, her nails, her waxing and plucking, she's got food on the table and gas in her car. the kid has clothes on his back and a good place to sleep every night. our 401k is fully funded and we got a nice reserve of cash in the bank for a "rainy day." After all that if I want to go out and spend some free cash on some car related stuff she has no right to complain. The last time she got on my case I told her to "shut up and go make me a sammich." She didn't talk to me 3 days... those were 3 days of heaven. :ROTFL:

Lol well put! We may not have as good of a finacial setup as you, but I too look at it the same. When the bills are all paid, we have some savings, and our IRA is way ahead of schedule there should be no complaining. There's always food on the table, clothes on our backs and a roof over our heads. She goes shopping for clothes/shoes and always argues its for work and that's why she can spend money and I can't... I'm sorry honey but those sandals are not work clothes and you know it!

I have had my jeep almost 3 years now and the lift was the first money I actually spent on it and boy did I get hell. I asked her to make an itemized list of everything I spent on the jeep and my hobbies she always complains about and she realized I was right and haven't spent a penny on anything other then maintenance. She was mad to say the least and still kept complaining about my "spending". Vicious circle.

I'm reminded of two of my favorite quotes:

"If a man speaks in the woods where no woman can hear him, is he still wrong?" :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

A wise man once said,.... "If Mama ain't happy, then NO ONE is happy." .... :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

heh. I've been told that before by various people. to which i consistently reply...
she knew EXACTLY what she was getting into long before we got married. I have been a car guy since I was old enough to turn a wrench and drain my first crankcase. I have never been one to spend recklessly (I was the one who had the 20% to put down on our first house... that was $65k i had in the bank and actually quite a bit more.) I bided my time in my young years, banked money like it was going out of style and waited to buy my toys until AFTER I had a good financial position and even had bought the house. After all that I am allowed to indulge in my "childish automotive pursuits" if I so desire... I've earned that right and continue to earn that right by being wise in my financial decisions. in the past couple of years she's mellowed out on it finally, to the point i don't get the _*&()^&*(&( response when I buy parts occasionally. I do expect the in-the-near-future trailer purchase to cause some arguement, but I've been talking about it for months... correction, YEARS. When business was bad and money was tight I didn't go out and buy a new car, I waited until after I'd had a couple GOOD years before I even contemplated getting some new wheels AND made sure we'd recovered our savings before doing so. I am so not like so many of my friends (single, apartment dwellers, changing cars every year or 2, getting upside down on loans, having CC debts, basically being the worst when it comes to financials) that I deserve to use SOME of OUR money as I see fit, just like she does.

only bit of advice I can give someone who is married (other than GET THE F**K OUT NOW IF YOU CAN!!!) is NEVER let her take your Man Card. If you ever get to the point where she asks you "do these jeans make me look fat?" and you're afraid to give her your honest opinion "why no honey... I'm confident the manufacturer used stitching made of some unobtainium that can with stand the pressure they're under now." then you need to get out. if your balls in her purse then you're done forever.

Brave you are, but no the wife doesn't wear the pants or keep my you know what in her purse. But I do follow the "if she's happy I'm happy" motto as it is generally right. Plus after 10 years of stubborness on my part I'm slowly getting to the point of who cares and go with the flow as its much easier and less stressful.

Back on topic...

Terry, sorry to hear of your problems. I'll miss running through Ocala National Forest and visiting with you. You're a great guy with a wise outlook on life. Sorry you are having to give up wheelin'.

The Jeep and I will still go down together. I'm not getting rid of it. All I'm saying is I can't continue riding it off road anymore. If I was able to do all the repair work myself I would still be doing the trails etc. But when you have to pay for parts and the labor it does get expensive. This last one cost me over $1K. Half of that was in labor. I just can't afford to keep doing that. My wife and I live on a fixed income which in reality is going down hill with the way the economy is these days.

Now if you want to go back and search more of my posts to make more snide remarks...go for it. I really don't give a "F".

Terry

Ah so you're keeping it still? Good, so you're still part of the group! :)

I haven't been off road since February, with moving etc...not a priority.

Yep, still drive it and I will be going to the East Coast Safari. That will be my next and last time to take it trail riding.

My wife and I are also on fixed income and it is going less far all the time. The government has stated that the Consumer Price Index hasn't gone up this past year. Don't know what they are smoking, but I know that our expenses have increased substantially. Fuel is outrageous, insurance costs have gone up and health coverage gone down, groceries are higher. That means less usable income to us no matter how you slice it. So a lot less camping and wheeling for us. Unlike Terry, I am fortunate that I am able to perform a lot of the maintenance and repairs on our Jeep. Having to take it to the shop for repairs is financially draining. Even though my wife enjoys wheeling about as much as I do she is not a happy camper when we have to shell out big bucks for a repair that I can't handle. I fully understand Terry's position... family comes first.

Terry, I’m not trying to dig up old posts to prove a point. I was trying to figure out why you were having a sudden change of heart. Most of us who read your post got the impression that you were selling it.

Wheeling doesn’t have to require wrecking your jeep or damaging parts. I own two Jeeps and I wheel them all the time; however, I know my limits and I stay on trails that wont destroy my Jeep. I have yet had to replace parts or had anything damaged while off-roading. So rather than abandoning your love for off-roading; start choosing trails that you feel comfortable with. Also, you need to know what your Jeep is capable of and your level of expertise.

If it were me who posted this thread, I would've called it "Black Hawk Down" but I do have penchant for the outrageous.
I beat the snizzle out of my KJizzle and I've had very little maintainence due to offroad action and I'm out every weekend practically. I even wheeled all over FL for a year with no ill effects save for the time I got hi-centered in door handle deep water in WPB and ended up with 2" of water in the interior. I am in a similar boat in that I don't do my own work... I don't even change the oil myself. I am guessing that your failures must be mud related since the terrain is basically flat where you live. There are several members of the SFJC with very nice rigs that never wheel in FL due to all the mud; they'll wait for trips to MOAB or WindRock to hit the trails.
