Bike racks

for those of you that go cycling, what brand hitch bike rack fits the Liberty??

I'm worried about the clearance of the spare tire.....

i have a thule hitching post and its made for 1 1/4 inch reciever but it will not clear the tire so i got a 1 1/4 to 2 inch adapter and it clears fine, only thing is i paid alot of money and its never been out of the shed in a year,or has it ever been used, ive got all the yakima roof mounts but only thing with that is when i use it the bike mounts on top of the basket which is allready 7 feet tall, so going with the hitch mount is not that bad!!
if you are in the md,va area i may sell it cheap? shipping would be threw the roof because of weight and size

thanks for the offer, but Im in Michigan. Im pretty sure there is an adjustable one out there... Ive talked to a TJ owner at a meet and he had one....

I am using a Thule 943 (spare me) spare tire mount rack.

I had it on a 1996 Ford Bronco and it fits my 2006 Liberty just fine.

It has been discontinued but here is a link to the new replacement model:

I bought a Performace X-Port 4 bike carrier hitch mount. It includes a long reciever shaft with multiple pin slots. When inserted closest to the vehicle it clears the stock OEM tire with an eigth of an inch of clearance. Pulling it out to the last slot gives about three inches of clearance. I bought it for around 100.00.

I am using a Sportworks 2 bike carrier, the factory receiver with a 7" extension
fits just right,

I'm using the Yakima Big Horn. I have a Hidden hitch 2" with extension to clear the spare. I cut the extension down and redrilled the hitch pin holes so it just clears. The extension I got made it stick out like 6-8 inches past the spare and with 4 bikes loaded, it really had them hanging out there.

I picked up the Thule Expressway 996. Its a pretty solid bike rack and fits the 2" receiver, but it looks like a 1 1/4" is also available. The rack without using an extention just clears the tire (actually I think it presses against the tire ever so lightly. While this rack bends down so you can open a hatchback, it does do you any good with a spare tire and swing gate. But the rack does have a lock built in and folds down when not in use.

That Thule Expressway is a GREAT 4-bike rack. I had that on my Jetta before getting the Liberty. I went with the Thule SpareMe rack for the Liberty though, instead of a hitchmount. It/when I need to spend the money on a rack for more than 2 bikes, I plan to go with a hitch extender and either the Yakima BackSwing4 or the Thule 998XT Trailblazer. They both swing out of the way so you'll be able to open the flipper glass and swing gate.

I can't say anything about the quality of these two specific racks since I don't currently have the need for more that 2 bikes at a time. But I have own both Yakima and Thule equipment and it is all bullet proof. I'm pretty sure these swing aways will be too.

Me too. Although I couldn't open the tailgate with the rack on, even in the down position. That is until I turned the carrier upside down. That gained me enough so that I can use my tailgate again. Great rack, but it is now discontinued. The rack division of Sportworks was purchased by the company that owns Thule. I don't remember the # but they have it on their site. www.thule.com
