I have owned my CRD since new and it now has 88000 miles on it. It has been acting strange lately. It has done this 4 times in the last 15000 miles. It happens only when it is at operating temperature and is shut off for a brief time (5 to 30 minutes). When it is restarted it idles very rough, like it is running on 2 cylinders. It runs much smoother when you accelerate but sounds very quiet. It will only accelerate to 1500 rpm even at full throttle in neutral. When you try to drive it will maybe go 20 mph. The first time it did it I shut it off right away to see if it was like limp mode and reset itself. It did not, so I drove a mile or so to a better parking spot. There was no smoke even though I had the throttle floored for a mile. I then shut it off and checked the primer for air, (it was tight so I don't think there was air in it). I checked the air to air hoses and they were fine. I started it back up and it ran fine for 4000 miles and did it again. Every time it does it now all I do is shut it off and restart it 3 times and it works fine. No codes are ever generated by this. I would appreciate any advice you guys would have. I have read this forum for over 5 years and do not remember anyone having this problem before.

The only times mine has done that - it's been a fuel issue.
1) change filter, add Powerservice.
2) get the new style fuel filter head - makes sure it's not leaking air in.

I guess I need to put the new filter head on, I have just been putting it off. Thanks for the reply.

Fuel would be my guess as well. Another possibility is a stuck Flow Control Valve. These had plastic gears that stripped out.

Mine did that on occasion back when we first got it (30k mi).. added the in-tank fuel pump and have never had the experience since.

Got 145k on it now.
