I just got my timing belt replaced at 103,000 miles, I did all the recommended parts, all the old parts looked ok, water pump bearings and seals looked fine, tensioner bearing seemed fine, idler pullys were fine maybe a little lose, and the real problem the timing belt, looked great probably good for another 20,000 miles. It took a good mechanic alot of hrs and cost me $800 plus my parts. I'm glad it's done and looking foward to another 100,000 miles in my Liberty.

Well, that pays for peace of mind. If I get a quote anywhere near $800 for labor, I'll definitely be doing it myself.

There are lots of folks here capable of doing the TB themselves; I am not one of them. :grim: Had mixed success mechanically over the years and don't want to make an expensive mistake. AFAIK the dealer rate is about $600 labor by the book and some know it takes more time than the book time and charge accordingly. Some dealers do questionable work and they usually use the retail cost of parts. Seems like the extra $200 may just be good insurance if you know its is a competent mechanic.

It's really an all day job with water pump. I know from when I did mine. In my shop my labor rate is low at $55 per hour so it would of been $440 plus shop, haz and parts.

Ok guys, I got all parts to start working on my TB but I have some general questions for those whose done it. do you leave the radiator/condenser/intercooler on the libby or remove it? what bolts and/or nuts are loosen clockwise instead of clockcounterwise? will 6mm allen keys do the trick of the cam pins? thnx

I'll let those that have done weigh in but until then you might check out http://www.greendieselengineering.com/f ... st/72.page and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60858 (Sir Sam updated this on 6/30).

As to whether or not the radiator/condenser/intercooler need to come off; the short answer is no assuming you can get the mechanical fan undone without full front access. I've not tackled this but I did buy the Lisle tool Sir Sam illustrates. There is lots of chat on fan removal how to on the forum.

tjkj2002's rhyme is fine for standard threads and in this case it's correct; the fan unscrews counterclockwise. If I recall correctly the timing belt idler pulleys are reverse thread though.

PS it occurs to me that after you remove the fan it would be a good idea to clean the threads with a stainless steel brush and just before reinstall apply some antiseeze thread lube to make the next removal easier. The fan rotates counter clockwise so as the fan mount on the engine rotates it tends to screw tighter into the fan mounting nut.

I will check tomorrow in my box of parts, but I believe they were the other way - Clockwise to loosen as they run on the BACK of the belt, so are turning counter-clockwise their entire life.

When you get the front cover off, if everything looks nice and clean, no grease ejected from the pulley bearings... Think about whether you want to mess with them. It is a personal choice, all of mine looked perfect including the tensioner, and were all smooth and tight in function. B/c of that, I *only* changed the belt itself.

But I happen to be a crazy fool that has the full toolkit, so I know what I'm getting into here. Everyone else might not be.

Yup, this is how I went about it, I only replaced the belt.

Yup! They are the same part, used in the same fashion... Using the same bearings.

Only the price is different, b/c it is for a diesel, so it MUST be more expensive. :furious:
