Cheap Wrangler tires --- Let the flaming begin!

Before I pass on this information, I will say that I do expect a lot of flaming. So if you are having a bad day already and need to release some steam ....

It seems that my Jeep dealer routinely removes the (junky, dangerous, ought to be thrown in the landfill, not fit for hobo barbequing) stock Goodyear Wrangler ST's that come with their new trucks and replace them with something more appropriate.

I am a camper and hiker. The truck will never see off-road. So I bought 5 of these tires! For me, at $60 a piece, these are really affordable.

I emailed every local tire shop for quotes on anything under $200 per tire (including mounting) and all I could get were Wrangler ST, Wrangler SRA, Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10, Cooper Ironman and Federal Hero.

Anyone heard of Cooper or Federal tires?

The General Grabber HTS I purchased in 2009 were 84 USD. Shipping, mounting, and disposal were extra. Big difference in stopping. Before the exchange rate reversed, I combined a vacation trip to Canada with the purchase of tires at Costco in Nanaimo. Now, with no rebate of GST and the superiority of the Canadian dollar, forget it.

I just put a set of Khumo's on my 06, all terrains, in Jan. this year. Couldn't be happier with them. Took 2 long trips from AZ. to upper WA. State in Jan. through rain and snow from NO. CA. border all the way to Bellingham WA. Then 4 weeks later, from AZ. to SO. Shore Lake Tahoe. Great tires, good handling, good traction, quiet ride. Bought a set of 4 from my Jeep Dealer here in town, out the door for $497. mounted, balanced, nitrogen filled, taxes.

I can order a set of the Grabbers shipped from the US cheaper than I can get them locally.

It is sad but I think many Canadians order from the States because of cost. 1 in 6 of whatever I buy gets the Canadian duty and tax put on it. The border must be really busy to let so many go through!

Just rolled over 40,000 miles on the original stock tires with a decent amount of tread left and no problems. Essentially all paved miles with a few sand roads and boat ramps thrown in. That said I plan to do better when I replace them soon. Squeeto I don't know how to read to manufacture's codes on these tires but you might want to check the date of manufacture. Sometimes these factory tires sit around in inventory for quite a while before being put on a new car. I've known folks who got like 6 year old "new" tires going this route but that was some years back. Given today's just it time delivery to the assembly line that may no longer be an issue.

The problem I had was that they were paper thin and got holes if you drove over rough gravel.

and I'd be surprised if they had reasonable traction in snow
(Texas doesn't give you many opportunities to test that)

but they do get better mileage.....

Well you have no reason to be suprised. I found them terrible in the rain and the snow.

Paper thin, terrible in the snow, low quality:

I couldn't believe how much more stable the Jeep felt with new tires.

The Wrangler STs are made of paper. This is evidenced by the 27 lbs. listed weight. They are total garbage. I just sold 6 of these tires, in brand new condition, for $300 for the set just to get them out of my sight.

I wouldn't put STs on a wheel barrow, much less a vehicle my family rides in. Did Chrysler learn nothing from the Ford/Firestone debacle??
