Noit a Diesel...but...pulls like one...

I just purchased a 2011 Ford F 150 XLT Crew Cab "ECOBOOST" for the girlfriend.

3.5L V6 Twin Turbo...365hp and 420#torque...gets 90% of torque as low as 1500 rpm. It feels
like our diesels down low.

My boss just bought one of those. Pretty impressive for 3.5L motor.

He claims it pulls better than his Powderstroke did. Not sure I buy that.

I think he said they are supposed to get 17 city 21 hwy mpg.

His fuel economy is showing about 13MPG so far, but he has used it to tow his boat a few times.

Congratulations. You just bought the most sophisticated engine currently available in the U.S. If you think the CRD is expensive to maintain and repair...just wait until one of those turbos goes boom...or any number of other computer controlled parts.

Ford spent millions just to squeeze the power out of a gas V6 than the Cummins 4BT was making in the 1980s. :-)r

The 4BT puts out a whole 120hp and like 300lbs-ft of torque,not to mention the lack of emissions back then.

Not if you get out the screwdriver and simply turn the fuel plate up. :mrgreen:

It'll make the same power and get better mileage.

Ford wasted a bunch of cash.

Well no 4BT will ever pass emissions,more so after you turn it up.Ford did not waste any $$$,there out selling everyone else and direct injection gas engines are here to stay as GM has them also and starting in '13/'14 the new Pentastar V6 will be direct injection also.Should drive the SHO with the 3.6,it moves and get's 30mpg's.Made the saleman soil himself(yes he actually did) on the test drive,he told me to get on it a little so I did.

Direct ingected Gassers have been comming out for a few years. they seem like a way to have diesel torque and economy from what I read about them with out the bad image that diesel has for being dirty, slow and real loud when its not any longer.

I wonder what the oil and maintance requirements are? I bet synthetic oil is required since it has turbos. I would not buy one until they are more proven buy real people driving them,

Sounds like a good idea, until you realize this engine will probably only see 125 to 150K of life before needing a major overhaul. This is the case with most Ford Gas Engines that run Factory Boost. And I suspect these engines will be no different.

I owned a few fords with normal asperated 4 cylinder engines fron the 80's and those could hardly make 100,000 miles before they started showing lots of wear and using oil. same with other family too. we had a ford F250 when I was a kid that had over 200,000 with a 400 V8 in it that thing ran well but needed an overhaul too, it liked oil. things may have changed but I need to see them last before I buy one

I get 17-18mpg city...get 24+ highway at 65-68mph Very pleased so far!

The turbos are oil AND water cooled...the cylinders are water jacketed...no EGR: instead variable intake/exhaust valve timing to control emissions...these engines have been in front wheel drive cars previous (Ford Flex/SHO)...more hp/torque in longitudinal layout (Ford F150)...0-60 in 6.6 seconds in a 5450 pound truck

Don't get me wrong. I think this is a GREAT idea. I'm big into Tuborcharged and Supercharged vehicles. Two Buick Grand Nationals, Ford Lightning (2001), and my Jeep CRD and Jetta TDI. No naturally aspirated here!

BUT.....

When the Odometer hits about 75 to 90K, my advise is that it's time to trade or sell. Historically, this much boost pressure on a Ford Gasser bottom end WILL NOT hold up! And being complicated, I suspect it will cost a fortune to get overhauled.

Still would prefet to see a small Diesel in a Ford F150 - I'd buy tomorrow.

12 psi out of these two small BW turbos (K03s) is not "out of bounds" by any means. Now if the 4.4L Diesel was available in an Ford F150...I would be all over it!

Ford might say it takes regular unleaded...... hmmmmm 87 octane on a direct injected engine, I would not venture into one untill the first 150k+ rviews from real ppl start coming in, that is if they get to 150k. but the idea of maximizing power out of a gasser sounds attractive, i'd like to see a japanese manufacturer like toyota venture into it, then I would consider it.

Yeah.... seems overly complicated to make what a small diesel would make just to pass emissions and make it a no brainer for those in this country that are afraid of diesels. I think it's a great step towards a 1/2 ton pick up getting good mileage , but a small diesel would be better.
I'm leaning towards a new Tundra after all of the problems I've had with mt MOPAR. I added up all of the repair costs and the amount I've spent fixing simple issues negate the fuel savings of a diesel.

I have really yet to see somebody keep a new(er) vehicle to even see 90K bc they are scared that when 100K hits. Its going all come to a bad end and they let the scaredness buy them a new vehilce. These motors in just about every vehilce made to is ment to move well past 100K. But then again ppl dont follow the book on service. These motors arent made like they were in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

On the thought of the engines not holding up to boost im gona have to disagree. You have to remember that Forf didnt just slap turbos to there existing lineup, all of these engines wew reengineered to accept boost similar to the way Dodge redid the 1.8L I4 with restructured block and head studs for there turbo gasser. Id never buy one cuz there ugly :twisted:
