Herculiner.... roll or brush on?

Decided to redo all my flares and bumpers in Herculiner. The spray on stuff isnt durable enough and i dont care for the look anymore. Does it matter if i brush or roll on herculiner? which produces the best results?

I've always heard of people rolling it on. Maybe brush it on for tough spots? :google:

well it "can" be sprayed, brushed, or rolled on. Each of these give different results. I have heard that rolled is messy and splatters everywhere. I never saw a finished result brushed on though and wondered what the texture ended up like. should have probably phrased my question better

I would do a test spot on a hunk of plastic that's similar to the plastic on the KJ. If you spread it evenly and carefully, I would think a brush would work fine.

i just bought 2 1qt cans of it at Ace Hardware for $50. Pepboys has the entire kit that comes with a 1gallon can. i think its like $80 but there is a $10 off rebate. I dont feel like doing the rebate and i think the 2qts should be enough to do both bumpers and flares. i hope im right

Neither, don't buy it or throw it out... it sucks!!! I had a kit given to me, and I won't use it... you can buy much better if you can spray it at a paint shop. Mortens makes a great spray on liner. Troy has had it on his jeep for years and it is still shiny black. and after a year the grey on mine still looks new, and it hasn't been washed except for rain hail and snow!

Of course it is a hard life for a jeep to be on jack stands for a year... :5SHOTS:

Little late to the game but iv done two entire vehicles in herculiner and I recommend using a brush and dabbing it on in lieu of rolled or sweeping a brush accross. That way the.texture comes out much more even, but spraying it on would be the best. I did a Nissan d21 with a brush on one side and it came out nice ( the guy payed me for half the vehicle and only got half the vehicle coated) and I did a Nissan maxima with two coats sprayed and it looks awesome (in the wierd way a fully herculined Maxima can look awesome) its verry even and well textured, since then iv done several tubs and rocker pannels sprayed and only had people come back.with trail rash repair. brushed gave it a slightly clumpy look and rolled was just a mess everywhere and the rubber bits were hardly going on.

thanks, i actually started taping everything off last night. i bought some chip brushes and doing it that way. i read the herculiner tips and it says not to brush out the stuff as you would normal paint but to brush one time across to just lay it down and spread it. then to do the same on the second coat but at a 90 deg angle to the first coat applied. what do you mean by dabbing it on? like when you use a sponge but with a brush?

I have used Herculiner on several projects, when prepped properly it works awesome. I have found that when using a brush it tends to spread out the "grit" in the material where as when using a roller it gives the "grit" more of a even pattern which is more appealing to the eye and more functional if a anti slip surface is desired. In tight spots how ever you must use a brush. :JEEPIN:

brushed on one coat last night on one side of the jeep and front bumper. looks like crap :oops:

should have kept it with the spray on stuff. I guess i will try the roller now and see if that helps

Spray can or professional spray? Im thinking if they weather isnt bad this weekend getting a few cans and doing the roof finally.

I wish I could afford the professional stuff but >$100 is what fits my budget now and Im tired scratching and cleaning the roof when I wash(takes longer to wash my roof then the whole jeep).

there's some UV treated roll/brush on stuff.. not sure about the spray on?

That being said i guess you could spray it and then let it cure then paint it with a flat black primer

The rustoleom spray on looks the best hands down. the problem is it chips off fairly easily. thats why i redid it with herculiner. it looks really bad though. i tried brush and roller and neither look good in my opinion. it looks splotchy and inconsistant. also, the one part i did that wasnt already coated in the spray on rostoleum pealed right off. so...going to have to try and get some adhesive promoter for that area. overall very dissatisfied. if i was to bother doing this over again i would have just shelled out the money to have a pro spray something on. maybe herculiner sprayed on would look much better. ill popst pictures up but it will probably look fine. in person it looks like hell though

Ill probably just go with the duplicolor spray can. I dont care about fading rather Im in it for the protection of my roof.
