Lights on but won't start

My 2006 CRD just quit it on me. Had it in standstill for approx 45 minutes and as I tried to start it the engine just won't crank. All lights on the dashboard are ok, but as I turn the ignition nothing happens - it's plain dead. Anyone familiar with this issue??

there's are interlocks that keeps it from starting if it's in the wrong gear (also checks brake pedal)

check cables, wires around the shifter and the brake pedal
