Powersteering pump seized and shredded the belt. Looks like I get to replace it tomorrow. Gonna be fun. Feels like I was just in there to replace the timing belt.

Bummer. How many miles do you have on it? How much does that part run? Just curious.

Well the good news is that the pump was not seized, the tensioner when not under any tension moved so far that the pivot arm touched the PS pulley making it seem like it was locked down.

Late last night I decided I would try to make some headway on getting it pulled for today when I discovered that, ended up putting on the original belt(which I still had sitting around from the TB change a little while back) and am now running it. Put about 200 miles on it so far today and no problems, so I have no idea what caused the belt to come off, only thing I can think of is that it appears that the alternator pulley is locked up, maybe that somehow did it........

Also, it looks like its about a $200 part, owch.

When the tensioner did that on mine I replace it. I figure it wouldn't be long before it walked out again and hit the P/S pulley.

On a different vehicle when the tension got weak I throw a serp belt. No damage to belt but did have to replace tensioner.

I don't think the tensioner is weak, it sounds like when the belt was thrown the tensioner continued rotating past where it would have been with the belt (as if tensioning a longer belt) and hit the PS pulley. If the alternator clutch is locked, I would suggest trying Advance Auto - I got a complete lifetime alternator from them with the correct pulley for $150. Can't beat that.

You can check the parts availability for Advance and Autozone online, which saves a lot of time driving around. Cool that they have the inventory tied in now.

That is strange, it seems something is wrong with the tensioner to rotate that far, like a broken stop. On a spare engine with no belt on, the tensioner does not impact the p/s pump. Did the tensioner lose torque and slip off the alingnment pins on its backside?

The two half's of the tensioner is pressed together with a bearing and spring. Now imagine the two half's spreading with the spring trying to escape and and the outer arm hitting the p/s pulley. It will also lose it's stop when spread so much. I replaced mine and I was lucky I didn't lose the belt. The belt was worn from rubbing the tensioner arm.

I've already got a lifetime warrantee from autozone on it, I have a spare alt here with a good pulley(that doesn't charge), I will probably swap that pulley on and then return the bad pulley/bad alt unit and have a nice new one sitting here on the shelf.

looks like 5072440AB works for looking up the price, little shy of $200, pricey little bugger. I think I'll try the alternator first and see if it chucks another one.

Replaced the tensioner today, was seperating and coming apart. Pulled the one of off the MJ because it was easy to get to.

I also put on another belt as this one got chewed up again. I put on the belt from the MJ, its basically brand new but its been sitting around for years, so now I have a belt thats 5 years older than the Jeep, and is even a year older than the first CRD KJ. :-)r
