A lot depends on what you want out of your radio. If you want to use it just for trail rides placement doesn't matter. If you want to talk long distance and/or skip, then placement is a little more critical.

I have a k40 magnet mount that goes up on the roof on one of my jeeps. It gets great reception being up high and when I don't want/need it, I just pull it down and it's out of the way. The magnet holds strong and I think I've only gotten it knocked off my a tree once. It works much better than the one I have on my other XJ that is mounted on the rear hatch.

Depends on where you wheel but everyone I know that's had the antenna up front has lost it....actually, I don't know many people that haven't lost an antenna, irregardless of location, at one point or another!

Maybe your friends should watch where they're going... the point of the front-mount is you can see it in front of you... so nothing bad happens.... just sayin'

Good trails often make your jeep go where the trail wants it to go, not where you want it to go....wheeling in steep rocky terrain in tight woods will make you lose more than just an antenna!!

I kinda like the antenna up front. You can see the top of the three foot antenna from the drivers seat with out even having to move. (so you know when it is going to hit a tree )Still reaches out about a mile or so. I have to travel long distances to go off road and when it was mounted on the rear it would slap the side of the jeep when passing semi trucks. I put it on in May and have not taken it back off, it's solid. and the spring let's it flex when needed.

Got the tail light mount, added a heavy duty spring (not pictured) on a 3' firestick antenna. Works fine, put a quick release on and the spring helps it out when I encounter a low branch. Haven't ripped it out yet!

I notched a little space in the tail light for the wire to pass by.

Behind the tail light, there is a hole in the body of the jeep that passes into the rear cargo area under the plastic.

Then I just ran it under the plastic trim on the passenger side.

Right now I have a mag mount stuck to the back quarter of my roof but I am planning on a hood mounted like KsKJ. There is nothing that makes it look less grocery getter than a hood mount antenna, and without a lift this is paramount for my ego.

I've got a through the glass amplified CB antenna on ours for day to day use and when off
road I sometimes switch over to a longer magnetic mount antenna if need be.

Self tapping screws, measure a couple of times, make sure it is level, then drill a small hole for each screw.

Like VMKJCRD, LI_KJ, and myself, we cut part of the bracket to fit, I only cut off the corner because I wanted to make sure it wasn't going anywhere, two screws are mighty strong, though.
