happened to me, I went through everything, the rod needs to be fabricated or purchased used or new.

And it's not covered under any warranty, new or extended so it is definitely close to 600 at the dealership.

3 days later a buddy, with the exact same year, color CRD had his break.

What year CRD do you have? Mine is a 2002 2.5 Export.
Where did the rod break? at the top where the bearing sits or lower down?

If this breaks while on the open road it surely would cause an accident....surely Jeep must look into this!

2006 CRD started at the airport, drove home. Wouldn't start the next morning had to have it towed to the dealer for repair. Did not have any indication that it would fail prior to trying to turn the key the next day. Checked everything.

Sorry, I am not with you! Are you saying that the actual steering column shaft is not the problem but the small plastic/metal rod that goes into the ignition switch and prevents the jeep from starting?
If it is the latter case then have a look at the post a few lines above by Pete M "06 CRD does not always crank..Problem fixed" ...there is a complete fix to the broken starter switch breakage issue. :?
