Mopar Ipod connectivity kit.

A couple of years ago I started up my CRD and the 6-disk in dash player started making horrible sounds. Eventually I ended up pulling that Goldberg device out, (leaving the radio portion) and installing the Mopar Ipod connection kit.

Then last week I noticed that the radio display no longer read IPOD, but SIRUIS. Interesting, since that was one of the few options I didn't get. Also the song info didn't show, sometimes the steering wheel buttons didn't work, sometimes they had a seriously delayed action. Once I kept trying to tap down the volume, gave up, and then watched the radio dial slowly down to 0 a minute later. Then I had nothing.

Then, like Stephen Kings Christine, things really went goofy. Random chimes, the EVIC reading dashes, idiot lights coming on, the whole nine yards. Then it would go away for a few minutes. Then come back.

Then the SIRUIS / IPOD would start disappearing, leaving me with AM/FM only (and I took the antenna off years ago).

So last night I removed the Ipod module.

Today, no chimes, no bad behavior. But I had to listen to FM.

Time to buy a new radio with USB, BT and steering wheel control inputs. Less headaches, more music.

jinstall - any suggestions? I had a Sony CDX-GT820IP with the SWI-PS steering wheel interface for a while and really liked it but the steering wheel controls decided to forget what they are supposed to do and the Sony was/is prone to forgetting its last settings when the vehicle is restarted (sometimes comes on if left off or sometimes comes on on radio when left on iPod - yes the clock worked so it was not losing power - same model radio acted the same on a 1993 Dodge Cummins and a 2008 Honda Element).

I sure miss the head display. Right now I'm running the OEM 6-disc changer with an iPod Neo ProLink v2 steering wheel interface. It's ok but no head display and it too occasionally forgets what iPod tunes were playing prior to startup.

The part number is 82209616AC. And it is of course out of production.

But some dealers still say they have some. I'm going tomorrow to a dealer that says they have two. If so, I'll be in business for another three years.

I also found out that I can't just get any new stereo that advertises Ipod connectivity. Because my Ipod is also obsolete - Apple, in their infinite wisdom, has changed the pinout of their proprietary connector since my 1st gen Ipod Mini (which died 2 years ago and I had to resurrect with a 32 gig CF card).

If none of the above works, a Sony DSX-S200X Digital Media Receiver and a 32 gig thumb drive are in my future. Hopefully I'll be able to wire that to the existing self amplified speakers and sub-woofers I've already patched in.

I used to be a big Alpine person and then the quality went to hell. For the past 6 years I have been using the Kenwood Excellon line and have been very pleased. I currently have the KDC-X 993 in the KJ. I am looking to upgrade to the 995 soon only because the 2 year warranty is coming up on it. I have passed down my older units to family members and all of them are still working like new. I have a $2000 Alpine in the closet that is broken and no desire to fix it.

I have not had any issues with iPod usage and only some issues with the iPhone. Just used a classic 7 on it with no issue and I daily use the iPhone 3GS 32gb with it. Search is my biggest complaint iPod and iPhone contact lists. The new 995 addresses Thea issues. The built in parrot blue tooth works well also.

There are several choices that will work with a modern Ipod. However I don't have one of those. It's a (resurrected) 1st gen Ipod Mini circa 2004. It's connector is different than newer Ipods so I was forced to go old tech or buy a new stereo and a new Ipod.

I'm now running a Sony MEX-BT3900U with the Axxess steering wheel interface as a result of some discussion with Crutchfield tech staff. The Axxess interface is pre-programmed for our Jeep steering wheel controls and is much easier to install than the other interfaces I've used although the instructions, as is typical, leave out one critical bit of information and is opaque on another. Opaque - ignore the bs about USB update of the Axxess module as 1) it's not USB it requires a special USB/CAB cable and 2) it's really only relevant to Axxess resellers as it allows them to update stock inventory for new vehicles. Critical - the instructions make reference to "pins" but are not clear what pins are being referenced; short version connect the Axxess pink pin 1 wire to the Jeep white/violet pin 14 wire on the Jeep side of the factory radio plug.

I mention this only because this particular radio along with others has a front panel USB input and a stereo mini jack (aka headphone jack). Hence I suspect it would play from an older iPod as long as that iPod can output via USB or can play to a set of headphones. In the latter case just use a double ended stereo mini jack to connect the iPod head phone output to the radio input and use the iPod to control what the radio plays. Doubt that song info would be displayed but the music will.
