I would say both if you can. I love my CRD never owned a wrangler but rode in many. TJ's are not as smooth and not as secure as the KJ. I do like the open top option and they are better off road or can have more aftermarket support than the KJ. KJ CRD is is more comfortable gets better MPG and can tow more than TJ ever will.

u could just cut the top off the kj then u can have some of both worlds

Have an 04TJ lifted/mud tires and it gets about 13 mpg. I love it, and is a dream to wrench on. However, th CRD is not an off road machine. Did I take the CRD up the highest mountain pass in Colorado in 4lo for 70 min to the top... Yes. But at the offroad parks wranglers rule, period.

I've personally seen 2 tricked out TJ's with our CRD power plant under the hood and WOW, was it bad A%*!!!!!!!!!

When my CRD gets old then I will transplant her into the TJ for sure!!!!!
