 Post subject: Things to look for when purchasing Liberty CRD

Ok, So I am going for a test drive tomorrow.

What are some things I should be looking out for? I understand that some of the Liberty's have a TC problem. I read one way to test this out is by getting it to kick into over drive and then backing down to around 50mph where it may attempt to kick in and out of overdrive. If it shudders than it has a TC problem.

Anything else that I should be looking for?

The vehicle was previously throwing a CEL, but the dealer had it looked at and had the flow control valve was replaced and it no longer has the light.

check engine light. when I bought mine, the past owner had remove the check engine diode so the libby would never have a light on again. I didnt catch it because I was looking for the light to be off and indeed it was off :?
make sure the light come on when you have the key on and engine NOT running and that it goes off when engine is running.
I would also advise to check the fuel water separator head to see if it had been updated to the new style already.

Most are approaching 100K miles and are in need of a timing belt. If it is anywhere near there remember it is at least $600-800 in just parts. And it is not really an easy car to work on. If you pay a good mechanic to do it that might bring it up to $1500. Something to think about.

Ujoints/pinion play, you can listen while coming to a firm stop and then excelerating off. If you can do it it should resinate around 92mph as you get ot 100 but most do not feel comfortable doing this. Look under the carpet under the PS floorboard and see if it is wet.

Check Sir Sams NOOB guide. Wet floor on passenger side with no antifreeze smell is probably a stopped up heater/AC box drain which can usually be cleared from the outside (it's on the firewall down toward the turbo I presume, at least that's where it should be; I've cleared this problem before but not on a CRD). If there is an antifreeze smell it's from a heater core leak.

Ok guys, here is a video of the liberty that we test drove today. It seems to have a bit of a fluttering sound, this doesn't seem normal to me.

I do believe that I hear what you are hearing, its hard to say what it sounds like in person vs recorded via a phone(not the best sound equipment mind you), but my first thought is that it is a alternator decoupler that is seized or making some sort of noise. typically when the engine is under some load you will hear a bit more noise out of it, like with the AC on or something. Usually though I think the noise sound more squeakish, this sounds more like a metallic tick or rapping.

then if you skip to 40 seconds into the video you will hear it back together, with the serpentine belt on and the decoupler that was bad, you can hear a bit of noise(though not as frequently as yours) that is kinda similar.

The best solution is just to replace the alternator, $150 for a new alternator with a lifetime warranty VS $100 for a new decoupler pulley.


So my thought is that its a bad alternator pulley, but it could be something else(anyone who has experienced a bad torque converter have any input on if it sounds like that?)

In any case though the sound is not normal and I would recommend figuring out what it is before proceeding.

Yeah I would have to agree, that is a VERY similar sound albeit alot louder on the Jeep in question. Regardless I would not be buying something with a noise like that unless I was getting it dirt cheap.....................tell them to replace the alternator and if the sound is gone you will be interested......that way you aren't fronting money to fix something that may be something much worse.

mine sounded the same when it was on gear and it went away by replacing the passanger side motor mount ($50 and about 45 min worth of work) but again mine made the sound only in drive not in park.

one more thing, it seems to me it still has the old style fuel water separator head, so that will be a sure upgrade sooner or later for like 120 bucks including the filter.

Camo thanks for noticing the fuel water separator I didn't know how to identify it as old vs new.

I checked the motor mounts by having my wife put the car in drive and give it gas, and reverse and gas. It did not budge when she did this so I think the motor mounts are good.


A friend from the biofuelstechnologies forum owns one and this is what he said about the noise that mine was making:

Sounds like one of your clutch fans (thats what they call them and there are two, one behind radiator and one in front of intercooler) is on the way out. That is common on these rigs, I had one fail @ 90K, its louder when you shift because it is electrical and surge when idle is brought up or down. Is this the one with the check engine light? Also you are missing the engine cover that says JEEP CRD 2.8 It quiets down the engine a good amount, and should be on such a low mileage car. Have your mechanic run a voltage test to see if the fan is going, and if so that it hasn't wrecked your battery with so much cycling.............keep us posted..........greasy

How much would you offer after they fix the noise? Short story on the price, his website said 12,888, but another website that lists the same vehicle autotrader says 13,888. He is going to honor the 12,888.

A couple of things he said kinda seem off to me and IMO(and no offense to your friend) makes everything he has to say sound suspect.

1) There is only ONE fan clutch, and yes they are not uncommon to fail, but they don't ever make any noise like you posted when they fail, they just stop pulling as much air through the radiator.

2) There is an electrical cooling fan in front of radiator stack - if it were to fail it would make a different noise. I don't see how an electric fan would be cycling as much as this noise is to cause it.

3) The engine cover is missing - it doesn't make any difference in the sound of the vehicle(IMO) I ripped mine off long ago because I like to be able to see my engine and get to components when I need to. IMO its only purpose is visual/aesthetics, so you don't have to see that engine, and instead can look at a nice curvy peice of plastic.

4) I don't know what your friend means by "voltage" test, he probably means what the battery voltage is, but an electrical fan cycling on and off is not going to kill a battery unless the battery voltage is low for some other reason(IE the alternator is not charging).

Generally when an electric fan fails it fails two ways - bearings go out and it makes a constant regular noise until a bearing finally seizes and the electric motor is seized, or the brushes or winding fails and it shorts out internally, if this is the case the current draw will go way up and blow a fuse. In any case I don't see how an electric fan has anything to do with this.

In short personally I would take everything he has to say with a grain of salt(please don't take offense to this with him being your friend).

I would have to second Sam.... with all respect to your friend, he is either BSing you or he was probably thinking of another car!!!! back to the engine mounts.... my mount was not broken anywhere, the think is that the mounts on the crd are also isolators and they can fail internally producing different noises due to vibration, if you check the mounts the classic way by shifting from R to D and looking at the engine movement it might not tell you all the truth about them (at least that was my case).

Ah ya, that was the other comment I wanted to make, the mounts can look fine from the outside, but can break internally and make noise.

That being said, even a bad motor mount I don't think would make the noise you are hearing, it is possible that it could, but it would have to be about the worst motor mount any of us have ever seen, not that it isn't possible someone ignored it for a long time and it got worse and worse, but typically a bad or loose motor mount makes a clunking noise over bumps or coming to a stop.

The alternator decoupler pulley has a lot of reddish dust on the cover, this signals a failing one-way clutch. Run it at idle again while looking at the accesory drive belt. The belt tensioner is located on the lower left of the front of the engine. If you see this thing bouncing, it signals a bad alternator pulley. It should be rock solid. Excessive bouncing of the tensioner will also wear it out prematurely.

Based on what others noticed, you have up to $500 in fixes due and the price seems a bit high for how it is currently running.
