I have the 2002 2.5 CRD manual as shipped to the overseas market.
I have been looking through some posts recently regarding the viscous clutch for the cooling fan and the various modifications to the viscous clutch (Hayden clutch, 11 blade nylon fan etc.) and I have noticed that some CRD owners refer to the electrical fan situated behind the grill which is mainly to cool the air conditioning radiator.
Now when I look at my CRD...there is only the viscous clutch fan...no extra fan for cooling/aircon etc. and the 2002 CRD service manual and wiring diagrams shows no such electrical fan.
So my question is.....is the manual 2.5 CRD...with air con but without transmission cooler....supposed to have an additional electrical fan or does this only apply to newer CRDs or CRDs with a transmission cooler?
The reason I have been looking into this issue is that after 9 years of use, my air con does not seem to be working as efficiently as before and I need to look into having the system re-gassed/checked for leaks.
The air con clutch does engage/disengage OK and the Blend door does appear to be working fine so I was a bit concerned about under hood temperatures/cooling issues...engine is not overheating at all! :?

Edit to add: Air con is working fine now? I think the Blend door may have had a problem and fiddling with it has loosened it up :?
Still would like to know about the extra cooling fan issue though.

If those documents show no fan or provision for a fan immediately behind the grill and in front of the AC condensor and radiator assembly and you don't have one then I'd presume that's normal for your vehicle. I'm going to go a bit out on a limb and speculate that the electric "pusher" fan behind the grill's primary purpose is to provide extra air movement across the AC condensor at stop or low speed where the primary fan immediately in front of the engine is not operating to pull air thru the AC condensor and radiator assembly. I cannot tell from a guick glance at early CRD documents whether or not the 2002 2.5 CRD has a viscous main fan or a full time mechanical fan. Take a look at your main fan, if it has a modestly thick (1-1.5" thick) assembly on the front of the fan, about the size of a pie pan, then you have a viscous fan as that assembly is the viscous fan clutch. On the 2005-06 models, US and overseas, that clutch is temperature operated such that the fan free wheels until the aair temp off the radiator is high enough to engage the clutch at which point the fan is directly driven off the engine to bring the engine coolant temp down.

If the viscous clutch fails the fan won't engage which may result in increased engine coolant temp is certain operating conditions and poor AC performance. The normal way to check for viscous clutch performance is to insert a block in front of the AC compressor and radiator assembly and run the engine, with a thermometer in the air flow stream (typically drill a small hole in the fan shroud to insert the thermometer in the air flow) and see if the fan clutch engages when the air flow temp is about 200F (see page 7-61 of the 2006 FSM for details, a copy may be obtained at http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/). The fix for a bad viscous clutch is to install a new clutch, typically the Hayden because it's heavy duty and engages a bit earlier than the OEM clutch, sometimes with the nylon fan for lighter rotating weight, or to install a full time fan, see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=51618&hilit=fixed

Everyone who has installed either option reports both better engine cooling and significantly improved AC performance. But of course if you have/had a sticky blend door than that may explain your AC problem. FYI there is a thermometer based AC performance check also in the 2006 FSM but how well it applies to the 2002 I don't know as the 2002 likely uses a different compressor and AC gas.

Thanks for the response, I know all about viscous fans and how they work and my 2002 CRD definitely has one and it works fine.
I just find it strange that I have read several posts from owners of newer CRDs that comment on problems with their viscous fan and problems with the electrical fan in front of the air con radiator. :?
Anyhow it is not important now...my air con is working extremely well at the moment. :D
