I pulled my MAP this weekend after not looking at it for 112,000 miles (I cleaned it at 28,000 miles, instituted ORM, switched to the Eco Tune by GDE last year and switch to ULSD about the time I cleaned the MAP). There was the smallest about of grime. I could still make out the sensor in it little plastic roll cage :? . I may have cleaned the MAP one other time, but I did not write it down. Regardless, it has been 10's of thousands of miles since it has been pulled.

I don't know how to do the poll feature here but I am curious as to whether people think it is even necessary after the initial mods and now the complete transition to ULSD has been made?

If someone would present the poll question, that would be great. However, I think that it may be useful if people know that once they do something correctly, they may never have to do it again. :pepper: With some parts becoming brittle with age and use, I think it what does not need to be re-checked after a mod has been made is as important as usual maintenance.

Cheers and thanks,

What gunks up the MAP is the coking from the EGR and oil mist. Get rid of one or both, the MAP will stay clean longer.
According to GDE's published write ups, they reduce the EGR but do not eliminate it.
If you never want to clean your MAP again, better go with the ORM, SEGR and/or plate the EGR; plus install a good oil separator.
My Inmotion stage 2 runs fine with out the EGR, my oil separator I built works well and keeps the oil out of my hoses, intercooler, and manifold. Plus my MAP stays clean.
Other tunes advance the timing a little more than Inmotion Stage 2 and plating the EGR may have less than desirable consequences.

i emailed keith at GDE about that once:

One question, you guys mostly disabled the EGR, i think i remember reading that its only used to prevent turbo overspin or something to that effect.. correct?

as in there's no reason to drive around with that sensor unplugged anymore?

His response:

The EGR is a paper weight, you can plug the sensor back in with no issues.

Thanks,

Keith

Thanks Warp, that lends credence to what I thought all along. The EGR is basically disabled with the tune, the ULSD doesn't have much S to act as a particulate in the first place AND I learned not to overfill the jeep when changing the oil. Thought I'd post the question to see if anyone else is still cleaning their MAP. I likely never will again. The likelihood of breaking something upon removal/re-install or damage during cleaning (when not really needed) far outway the precieved benefit of pulling something that lon-ago was fixed.

I'm the same way, with the ORM and EHM for so long the intake stays clear, last time I cleaned the MAP was when I replaced the tranny at 82k, just recently before I left for NJ I cleaned it again at 116k or so, looked just about as clean as when I cleaned it last time, which was also not very dirty at all.

So ya, with the ORM and EHM enabled, and with them enabled for awhile to get the system cleaned out, there's not much of anything that builds up.

While I would not say to never do it again, checking it every 50k miles would be perfectly reasonable, though each time you would pull it and look at it and say "Well that sucker is still perfectly clean, this was a waste of time and my clean hands"

X2, I'd say 50K miles would be reasonable to check it if you have a SEGR/Provent setup or the equivalent. Might go ahead and replace the o-ring on it at that time as well.

A drop of air compressor oil on that o ring does wonders for an easy reinstall that's unlikely to tear the o ring especially if you give it a slight twist during the install. Not that I plan on popping mine out very often. I did the first clean, could hardly see the cage around the sensor, at 31K, when I got the GDE tune and did a very light clean at 34K. I'll probably check it at my 42k oil change and if it's clean leave it alone until the timing belt gets done.

A litltle silicon dielectric grease - ie, what they sell in those small packets at the counter of auto parts stores, to put on the rubber boots of gasser spark plug wires - works good as well, and helps to keep the o-ring from hardening up.

If you don't have any permatex, a light film of it will help hold gaskets in place upon reassembly, and works wonders on hose connections when years down the road it becomes necessary to remove said hose from the pipe.

Remember the GDE tunes as stated in their documentation reduce the EGR but do not eliminate it. Any Exhaust (even a reduced amount) from the EGR mixed with the oil vapor will carbon up the MAP sensor.
Those of use who have eliminated the two causes of the problem, 50K is a good interval for cleaning. If you are using a partial solution, you will need to clean the MAP more often than 50K.

May Sir Isac Newton rest in peace.

So, if I'm of sound mind, I believe that we have a consensus to possibly update Sir Sam's Noob guide or possibly an addendum to the MAP Sensor Sticky on the Tech forum or possibly a revised Old Navy MAP sensor sticky?

If the Noob guide mods have been performed and if one uses ULSD, check the MAP every 50k miles after initial cleaning at time of purchase (assumed that all members/inquiries are new people with a used vehicle) and apply a grease that will keep the seal pliable without eating it (reader preference inferred).

I suggest that the tech site be cleaned up a little. Needs are changing and some of the posts need to be modified.
