First the cold Fuel Cooler I installed a couple years ago that takes up too much space will need to be removed. It is only twice as big as it needs to be to keep the fuel cool.

Next, I put the B&G 72068 Cooler in with hoses attached and strap it into place to keep my trans cool along with the extra deep PML pan used on Dodge Cummins trucks with the 68RFE trans.

Next, I put the cushion pads onto the B&G 72055 bend the mounting piece on the bottom end to match the angle and over lap the B&G 72068 just a little. Since the B&G 72055 is four times bigger than what I need for a fuel cooler, having some hot air from the B&G 72068 used to cool the trans will not hurt it. Fuel cooler is on top and trans cooler is on the bottom.

Here is the view from the front after it is all strapped in place with rubber isolation sections made from fuel hose.

With the street temp at 103F it worked out great in city traffic with out hampering the AC. Heat index was at 99F in the shade at the local Airport out in the country outside of town. The fuel cooler is to keep the fuel from getting up to ~160F where the ECM cuts back on fuel to prevent damage to the fuel system.

what was the fuel temp prior to the cooler addition?

I'm not sure why these engine would care about high fuel temps.
nothing in the fuel system is cooled by the fuel..unlike the 24v Cummins.
not saying its not, but just wondering

if the fuel temp gets above 160F - the computer cuts power.

although it's hard to get there

we've had 70+ days over 100 this summer and no issue with fuel temp - although I don't like to run under 1/2 tank and I'm not towing - so the heat dissipates


this seemed like a clean install on the return line- not a huge cooler and he mounted SS angle iron to protect it

Actually, the ECM will probably start pulling timing and fueling well before it hits 160 F - 160 F to 170 F is where it's getting ready to take VERY noticeable action to protect the injection system and engine - I'd wager when you start hitting 120 F and above at the supply, it's already starting to detune things.

Been down here in San Antonio with the same temps. 20 mile drive home at 3 PM on I-37/I-10, when I pulll into the apartment parking lot, the fuel return line is reading 135 to 140 F, measured on the metal part of the line between the transfer case skidplate and the rear diff, ie just before it goes into the tank.

If you're staying above 1/2 tank and not making really long trips, I'd say nothing to worry about. But if you're on a long interstate trip, going for a couple hours or more at a time, and let it get down close to 1/4 before refueling....

I really like this set up and was wondering if anyone has info on it since you had to get the picture from somewhere ?

Yes that would be the one you have to either space the skid plate down quite a bit or get rid of it all together.

one of the folks from Oz - only comment was
'Put the Derale heat sink type fuel cooler on a heavy bit of stainless steel angle iron and bolted it to the side rail. It is almost strong enough to use as a jacking point! '

Exactly what i was thinking about I could stack it behind the grill running horizontal or vertical. I know that if built properly heat sinks are extremely effective and need little to no air movement. Just need air space really making it perfect for our KJs. I plan on installing mine before the stock cooler and probably and a fuel cooler to go with it also.

Mopar skid plate, plan to make my own when I get a chance. One thing I will do is protect the pan and oil filter with out blocking off the air flow to the pan. Not rocket science, but a little fitting some cardboard templates before I start cutting the steel.

Oil coolers are heat sinks with lots of fins. The more air you have going over the heat sink, the more efficient it is.

If you want an example of a Heat Sink made from an Oil Cooler, I had an old Long Plate type oil cooler that sprung a leak. I cleaned it out, hung it on the inside wall of the attic and mounted the amplifier for my TV antenna on it. After that the HDTV reception worked in Hot Weather with out looking like a picture made out of too few Lego blocks.

The B&G 72055 was in the garage and cost more to return than I wanted to put up with, so I put it to work as a fuel cooler.
