Here you go, 2013 is going to be a great year.

Mazda's CX-5 compact crossover will get a diesel option for the 2014 model year, according to a source familiar with the company's plans.

The CX-5 goes on sale in the United States in February with a 2.0-liter gasoline engine.

The vehicle will have Mazda's new Skyactiv fuel-saving technologies, which include direct-injection engines, a more efficient transmission and a lightweight frame and chassis.

Mazda allowed a group of journalists to drive pre-production European-spec prototypes at a press preview in Iceland last week. A CX-5 with a 2.2-liter, direct-injection turbodiesel produced more than 160 hp and about 310 lb-ft of torque, Mazda said. The engine will be the first diesel offered in the United States by Mazda.

A Euro-spec powertrain with a gasoline engine tested here was rated at 165 hp and about 150 lb-ft of torque. Power and torque will likely fall slightly for the U.S. version with the same setup. Mazda plans to lower the Euro-spec engine's high 14:1 compression ratio to 13:1 to run on 87 octane regular gasoline, engineers said during the media event.

Final U.S. specifications won't be released until the CX-5's North American debut at the Los Angeles auto show in November.

At 178.7 inches long, the CX-5 is more than 5 inches shorter than Mazda's CX-7 crossover. The 106.3-inch wheelbase is 2 inches shorter than that of the CX-7.

When it comes to the EPA and their Last Minuet Screw Yahs on diesels.
I tend to Trust Pedophile Kindergarten teachers more than the EPA :2cents:

It is 2011 currently. OF COURSE the release date for a US market diesel will be 2013. It is ALWAYS [current-year] +2 away, so that there is plenty of time to generate hype, get people into the dealerships to ask about it (and be steered into other vehicles) and then.... Cancel the release at the last minute with no warning or reason given... BUT wait, we have ANOTHER small diesel being released in just two years!

Cycle, repeat.

And the EPAophiles will make it happen, even if no Bait & Switch is intended.

This is the same platform as the Ford Kuga, have not found anything in balck and whit but I have heard for some time now that 2013 is the magic year for a small flood of diesels into the US. The Chevy Cruise has already been cued for release and I think you cna already order one at the dealers.

Ihave been saying since 2007 that 2013 will be the year of the small diesel in cars in the US:

Traditionally, U.S. auto buyer (and manufacturers) have shied away from diesel engines in passenger cars. There are a few diesel cars on the market in the U.S. already, mostly from VW (BMW and Mercedes offer diesels in limited models). Diesel cars are common in Europe and are a viable alternative to gasoline engines and hybrids in many instances.

A new vehicle is coming to the U.S. with diesel power that will have fuel economy good enough to make hybrids jealous according to Detroit News. The vehicle is the Chevrolet Cruze diesel and it get well over 40 mpg. The move is seen as a way for Chevy to meet the stiffer EPA standards that are looming for its entire fleet.

The diesel-powered Cruze is expected to hit dealer lots in 2013 and it will be built on the same line as its gasoline-powered brethren. Pricing for the diesel Cruze isn't known at this time. Right now, the gas-powered Cruze has a price starting at $16,525.

Interestingly, the Cruze is the bestselling vehicle in America right now with 25,000 units sold in June. That sales number was enough to put it ahead of the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. Analyst Dave Sullivan with AutoPacific Inc said, "I couldn't think of a better way for GM to capitalize on the momentum that Cruze has created for GM by adding a diesel."

The diesel engine Cruze would most assuredly cost more than the gasoline version due to the higher cost of production. New diesel engines have little in common with the loud and smoky diesels that many people are familiar with from years ago. Likewise, modern diesel cars can be just as refined as their gasoline counterparts.

We first heard news of the Cruze diesel in February.

Updated 7/22/2011 @ 10:00am

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson just confirmed that the diesel version of the Chevrolet Cruze will drive in 2013.

“I drove it the other day. It is great,” Akerson told USA TODAY. “These new diesels are quiet. Should make it in the low- to mid-40s, and that’s with an automatic."

Official Press Release:

Chevrolet confirmed today it will add a diesel variant to the Cruze lineup in North America in calendar year 2013. Diesel versions of the Cruze are currently being sold in Europe. Additional details on the Cruze diesel for North American markets will be released at a later date.

The diesel will bolster the already fuel-efficient Cruze lineup. Cruze Eco with a standard six-speed manual transmission, is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway.

Cruze recorded a total of 24,896 sales in the United States in June, the fifth consecutive month sales have exceeded 20,000. The success of the Cruze has increased Chevrolet’s total share of the compact-car segment from 9.5 percent a year ago to 11.9 percent for the first five months of 2011, even as the segment size grew 19 percent.

VW says they will sell 100,000 diesel in North America in 2011. Maybe more in 2012 with the new Passat. The BMW and the Mercedes do not count those being $50K to start. I am not sure why no other car maker comes out with a diesel. Fiat should sell the 500 in a diesel. Those stupid Smart cars might actually be smart if they sold the diesel model here. Jeep should have a diesel engine option on every model. Ford is just insane since they have diesel models of almost everything they sell here avaibile in other markets. Ford owns Mazda and they are probably to chicken to sell a diesel in N America as a Ford and if they do it will only be after Mazda does it succesfully. If they even do that.
In late 2005 I went the the Jeep dealership to get a part for my wifes PT Cruiser. I asked about a CRD and the salesman told me that they would not get one unless a deposit of 10% was made and you ordered one. So a week later I went back in a suit and talked to the manager about getting a Jeep liberty CRD in. And he said not without a $500 nonfundable deposit. Then he would consider ordering one. So I called a Jeep Dealer on the west coast of Florida and asked if they are getting any CRD Liberties. And he said not unless you leave a deposit and then we will order one. Later I read that Chrysler estimated that they would sell 3000 Liberty CRD's a year for two years. And if that worked out they would put the Diesel engine in the Grand Cherokee for 07. Turns out it was closer to 18K CRD per year for 05 and 06. And the dealers were reluctant to sell them. Aparently there are a lot of people that really like diesels.

Bob.
The reason you are seeing changes and possibly a diesel at Mazada is because Ford is divesting themselves of Mazada
At one time they owned 39% but current estimates are down to 3% and they are still selling.
Read about here and other sites.

Mazada! First thing they should change It's that stupid smile front end G......Look so idiot. :dizzy:

The old RF diesel engine found in Ford Tempo, Ranger, B2000 ....Are very reliable, most of those rig finish in junkyard because they rust out with there engine still running.

"IF" they "Manage" to offert a diesel powered CX5 this may kick the a...of VW and give them no choice to offert the Tiguan in TDI version to compete. Price them wisely is the key...

The KJ CRD was a move in the right direction but the price of VM motori spare parts just kill this baby. Nobody whant expensive maintenance fee and this is the problem with "exotic" diesel so Mazda have a chance to success only if spare parts price compete with VW, otherwise they are dead before been born

Exactly. I've lost count of how many times this has already happened in the last 6 years - and as Warp pointed out, in the 2 years between the announcements and the scheduled appearances, the EPA throws out enough additional regs to make said vehicles noncompliant. From what I've seen, between EPA/CARB, the federal government, and the lobbyists for large agribusiness and other corporations, they're trying to steer everyone into driving ethanol flex-fuel vehicles, ethanol powered hybrids, or battery-only electrics.

It certainly smacks of conflict of interest that the federal government is giving an on-the-spot $7500 discount for those buying a Chevy Volt, using our tax money, when the feds are part-owner of GM. And that the new CAFE standard for 2025 is ultra forgiving to those OEM's selling only a handful of hybrids and oodles of large pickups, and ultra draconian for those that don't (ie, VW and their TDI's).

Seeings beleiving.
Much like the toyota tundra powered diesel, the ram 1500 powered diesel that were supposed to debut 2009... 2010... 2011...
Would love to see more small diesels in the us market but seems the epa has made them useless if you plan on keeping them long term. Urea combined with egrs. Next vehicle will be a toyota

Yea, I'm believing when I see it too... And my next vehicle will be either a Ford diesel, VW Touareg diesel if it is in good condition, or maybe something medium-duty to avoid all this emissions crap and just get something reliable. I might even have to go back to gas or hybrid. Ugh.

To put the EPA into perspective, the plant director of the small Tennessee town I am working in this week referred him self as an Ex Drug Using Tree Hugging Hippie. The EPA was going to sue the town for noncomplience. Then the EPA Lawyers told him if the State of Tennessee would file a law suit, the EPA would drop theirs. The State of Tennessee settled and give them until 2016 to comply and they will comply by the end of this year. The director stated the EPA is out of control.
My point is that the EPA is full of Stupid Vindictive Lawyers who know less about the environment than the Prisoner who Paints Rocks in the Prison. Time for the EPA to make some big big cuts in staff.

Well all I can really say is the the logistics have been in motion for some time now, too much money has been spent to pull out now. GM is leading the pack with the Chevy Cruze. 2013 will be a good year indeed. Ford should be annoncing soon as well. A big surprise would be for Subaru to bring theirs. I know KIA brought one over for demo's at t he dealer about a year ago.
