Purchase 103k crd, and drive home... timing belt never done

There is a crd listed for 8.9k and the timing belt has never been done.. it has 103k on the clock. Thoughts on driving it 2.5 hours home? Risk business, right?

There is always a risk but another 150 miles or so shouldn't be much of a risk as long as you take it easy. That said I'd jump on doing the TB replacement right away once you get it home, assuming that you buy it of course.

Just drive it home... They don't say change it at 100,000 because the belts breaks @100k! I'm most jeep would make it to at least 150k but that's not worth trying! I (stupidly) let mine go to about 113k, luckly nothing happened. My belt did have some low spots and dry-rot but it didn't break.

Go get it!

Mine made it to 116k miles before the belt slipped and messed up $900 worth of rockers.

But ya to the OP, change that belt asap, theres no need to risk waiting on it.

Nice looking jeep DJKSWISS, The TB job is not really that bad of a job, all you need is to read as many threads as you can about the TB job and order the pars. If you do replace the water pump (which I did) it would be about 450 for all parts, but if you dont it will be about 250 for the belt pullies and tensioner, so there is no reason to take a risk on something that is not really that expensive. (just an opinion)

116k is not a early failure when the change interval is 100k.

There was an aussie at 98k that trashed an engine.

Where did you get these very inexpensive prices on the timing belt parts?

FYI, the "cheap" timing belt is still a GATES brand, which is quite acceptable for our engines. Kevlar, fits great. The only possible issue (could be with any new belt) is when you tension and try to get that sight-window to the appropriate spot, you might need to put excessive pressure onto the tensioner tool trying to line that window up. You don't need to do that if it won't go relatively easily, the belt is just a tiny bit shorter b/c it is new. Just pull it as tight as you can and tighten the bolt to the appropriate torque.

I actually slightly bent the pins on the special tool trying to get my Gates belt to that window. I did get it there, but it was REALLY a fight. Didn't have to.

I found the mopar belt just as difficult to install as the gates, IMO there is no difference other than the price.

I kept the pins in the cam, rotated the crank slightly CCW to get on right tooth and rotated crank back in place to have tight on left side of engine. Then the tensioner pulley was easy to install and adjust not so tight. Then I removed the three pins and rotated the crank two revolution CW and reinstall the cam and crank pins. At this time I reset the tensioner to the proper mark as per manual. Still a pain in the ars, but maybe helps the teeth to seat deeper and equalized tension the entire belt.
