Timing belt

Hi i bought my crd with 117000 on it and currently has 120000 is there any way to tell if the prevous owner had changed the timing belt

Well i guess ill Change it any way just in case they didnt

Check with the dealer - if they did the timing belt replacement at a Jeep dealership it should be in their system. Otherwise, just asking them for documented receipts of it being done...

I just bought one as well and couldn't prove it had been done previously, so bit the bullet and had it - cheap insurance against catastrophic engine failure.

A timing belt with 20K will look clean, but you will need to open up the cover to check. If you see any dirt or dust inside you will be 100% sure on having to do it.
Butt squeaks who trade off at 100+K tend not to do big ticket maintenance and brag about not having to ever put a dime into the vehicle, because they never do.

Well i just picked up a timing belt from advanced auto so now now its just deciding wheather to do it myself or have a mechanic do it.

Lots of posts on how to DIY which is, apparently since I've not personally done it, not technically all that hard just tedious to get it right. In fact the common "hard" (read physically difficult) part is getting the viscous fan off the front of the engine at the beginning of the project; lots of chat on how to (I've purchased the Lisle 43300 fan tool set but have yet to use it). Drop me an email if you want copies of a couple of the timing belt replacement writeups.

Where are you located, perhaps there is a helpful LOST member in the vicinity.

FYI GDE (http://www.greendieselengineering.com/g ... ethod=home) apparently rents the needed tools for a nominal fee plus a refundable deposit.

Im located near monticello, IN. ive been through many write ups including the gde one. The only thing is finding the time to do it.

If u have never done a timing belt I would highly suggest that you rent the tools from GDE. There is a waiting list, but it's well worth it.

Yes, it can be done without the "official" tool set. However, had I not been within driving distance of GDE for some advice and emergency tool rental I would of been screwed.

I am very handy with a wrench, but all it takes is a simple mistake (2 teeth off on the cams) and say BYE BYE to your engine. This isn't an engine to learn on without the proper tools.

If you could find someone who has completed a belt, that would be HUGE. Come on LOST members...... Anyone from his area????

Kgeisler2010 you might want to give Keith at GDE a call next week when they are back from a road trip. I don't know if they do belt installs or do on site hand holding but if my map software is right they appear to be only 4.5 driving hours from your location.

Without this info I hope you got a good deal.

Maybe just me but if I was selling a vehicle that had recently had a big spend on routine maintenance I would be using this as a selling feature to support my asking price. The fact that this information doesn't seem to have been volunteered I would assume that it hasn't been done.

As a buyer I would look at the maintenance schedule for the vehicle in question and require either proof that the big ticket maintenance items were in order or an appropriate discount on the price.
