I live in southern CA and the smog law law was changed this year so that we have to pass a basic smog test with diesels. Drat!

I took the Libby to a smog station for a visual today and the fellow noticed visible smoke and a missing cat. I don't have the old one, so I have to come up with a stock one in order to pass. They told me they will actually inspect for a factory cat and that there are no aftermarket cats for the CRD that are CA approved.

If anyone has one they can part with for some $$ or indentured slavery, let me know by PM, email or phone.

Thanks!

I took my down pipe off to weld on the bung for my egt pyrometer. Everything from the muffler to the turbo is all one piece :juggle:

Our CRDs use a form of exhaust filter, technically not a CAT. Used auto parts companies cannot sell real CATs. Not sure about our "filters". Hopefully, someone here can help you. A new one looks like it could be $800. OUCH!

Look into having a generic CAT welded in instead of bending over and buying the head pipe CAT assembly. Been there done that man times when I had a shop.
The techs at Government Smog centers are not the brightest and if they were, they would find a job some place else that pays more like the TSA or an oil change center like Jiffy Lube. :ROTFL: :ROTFL:
Since your CRD is not CARB approved, welding on a Performance Diesel CAT that meets or exceeds the OEM specs will get you to slide by and get your CRD approved. If you can't get a California exhaust shop to weld one on, you may need to border hop to Oregon, Nevada, or Arizona. If you want to border hop to where they speak Spanish, good luck.
Just make sure the flange is at least 2 1/2" ID for what ever you have welded on.

If you have to, tell the Smog Tech you punched a hole in the original when rock climbing and had a new CAT welded in to save the planet.

The visual check they did on mine to verify the CAT was present involved a mirror Attached to a long stick.

Don't know if this helps your situation, but here is a selection of 50 state approved diesel specific CAT from Magnaflow, which appear to be much more affordable than from a dealer.
