Hey ppl. I will need a turbo as mine seem to be starting to give up (longer lag, and noise from inside the compressor) I was wandering if some one here has a rebuild or use turbo in good condition that can sell? or if some one knows a place to get a use or rebuild. I saw some on line (including ebay) for about $1100 but at that price tag im tempted for the GDE stage II turbo. any way, just like any of you im trying to save some $$
any info is appreciated. :ALONE:

I have seen some from online rebuilders for ~$750.
If you search for posts from a Member who called himself, "Good CRD" (Professor Wanta BE Halliburton), he provided a link that checked out.
Good Luck

camo,

I work for a Garrett turbo distributor, the manufacturer of the turbo on our CRD. Currently, there are no parts available for rebuilding--don't let someone sway you into thinking this.

The only way to buy one, other than from an indiviual that you trust, is to buy a new one.

Garrett offer any reasons for not having any parts?
Sounds like piss poor product support to me.

Yea it is piss poor support... But their view might just as easily be "we can sell $20 of parts for $200 and make $180 in profit... or sell $100 in parts for $1100 and make $1000 profit. Hmm, which is better?"

At least this confirms what I was told by the Garrett distributor (and injection service shop) that I had taken mine to. Our options for replacement are NEW (and still subject to the same bad design choice) or NEW from GDE, and never replace it again.

FYI: I am now dealing with my third stock turbo failing, this one lasted less than 40k miles from brand-new (its the one with the VNT problem) and I discovered that it was leaking oil into the exhaust. The CRD was smoking like a train while idling the other day, and OBVIOUSLY (from the smell) burning oil. Whats odd, I added more oil to it to recover from the leaking... And it has stopped smoking now, and the turbo lag / VNT problem has lessened slightly.

I think until I get the GDE turbo, I will be running the engine at the tippy-top oil level possible. I don't care if the EHM smokes, I care that my engine lives. This design is SO BAD, that if the turbo dies and leaks out the oil too quickly, OR you don't notice the noise from the turbo dying... You can lose your engine before you know it.

Hoosier, Garrett needs to be made aware of these failures. On a design that had 20k sold stateside, we might only be a small subset of owners... But there have been a LOT of turbos talked about on this board. That points to a design flaw. BTW: This "brand new turbo" that I bought from a dealer and only has at most 40k miles on it... Has NOT TOWED ANYTHING HEAVY. The biggest thing I have asked the CRD to tow while this turbo was installed - an open trailer with a little 6kw generator on it. 400 lbs roughly. So this is NORMAL DRIVING, no EGR, no CCV, no backpressure.... and it ate itself this fast.

So the turbo rebuild kit that is out there doesnt work? or is not Garrett? or not worth it?

When you buy a rebuilt one, what has been done?

EAB,

It could be a knock off copy of the parts inside of the turbo--who knows. As a Garrett distributor, the variable vein turbos that we do receive (when there is a core charge involved)all get returned to Garrett for rebuild and sold as a rebuilt unit, identified as a rebuilt unit.

It bears repeating, if you are buying across the internet, it is buyer beware.

Geordi,

Being that I am a new (to me) '05 Liberty CRD owner, with 85K miles, I am taking some precautions that I wonder if you or others have taken.

I bought a new turbo oil supply line, P/N 05142607AA; the oil supply line attaching/banjo bolt, P/N 05142792AA; and attaching bolt copper washers (2 required) P/N 04720713. Many thanks to Sir Sam for the Parts Fiches!

According to one of the turbo techs in my shop, and he has conducted countless teardowns and failure analyses, THE #1 REASON FOR TURBO FAILURE IS LACK OF OIL SUPPLY.

I count four (4) curves and a pipe I.D. of 1/4" for this supply line. Not knowing how this Jeep was taken care of previously, I want to make certain that the oil supply to the turbo is as good as it can be now that I am the owner.

The variable vein design may not be as long lasting as fixed-wheel-only turbos; that is not just a Garrett thing. However, if you are going through turbo failures this often, with new units each time, then I would start looking into other things. The turbo failure is likely the symptom not the cause.
