Let us see here.

The 7.3 Liter Power Stroke Ford of ca 2002 and previous was the last to use a fixed geometry turbo. All 6.0 Liter Ford engines have them from 2003 forward.

The 6.6 Liter Duramax has used VGT turbos since 2001.

Not sure when Cummins started into the VGT scene but I can find out. It is likely when the common rail injection came along, ca. 2005 with the Ram 2500/3500.

Class 8 trucks, aka semi's, have used VGT turbo for several years too.

Same goes for city buses, dump trucks-most anything running an on-road diesel engine for the past several years will likely have a VGT turbo.

***For the record, the Garrett 2056V, P/N 763360-1S, that all of our Liberty CRDs are equipped with out of the box, IS a variable vein turbo.***

Our CRD GT2056V may share some characteristics with other GT 20 series Garrett turbos, but that is where the similarity ends. There are so many things to take into considersation when comparing turbos that it can get confusing quickly.

If you are considering a turbo upgrade and don't want to go the GDE route, which is a pretty good route BTW, then you may check into the "Disco Potato" Garrett GT2860RS,
P/N 739548-5. This turbo will support up to approx. 350hp, is designed for use on 1.8L-3.0L engines and is considered by Garrett to be "The ultimate turbo for small displacement street engines." It is also a dual ball bearing, fixed geometry turbo. It will also bolt on using that nice T-3 adapter mount that you have drawn.

FWIW,

You must have Virginia plates on it to be able to get away with going more than 1mph over the speed limit anywhere within that state of aszhole cops. Driving my Jetta in LIMP MODE through that f-ing state, I got pulled over and accused of doing 83, when a damm Escalade with Va tags passed me like I wasn't moving. I had out-of-state tags, so I got the ticket.

I tried telling the stupid cop that my car wasn't even CAPABLE of that speed in limp mode, it was limited to 65mph (and barely got there!) but he wasn't having any of it. Even offered to let HIM drive it and if he could make it go faster than 65, I would pay the ticket on the spot. Nothing doing.

Virginia sucks.

Florida tags. Autobahn is in Germany.

The Duramax didn't get a VGT till 04.5 LLY. The 01-04 LB7 were fixed.

Cummins didn't get VGT till the 6.7L came out it was a Holeset HE351v.

I considered the gt2860r "disco-potato". Its a little big. The GT2560R is its little bro. Very comparable maps. But it wouldn't take much to change up to the gt2860r if the Gt25 won't clean up the fuel.

Can't wait to see how the GT2560 works :pepper:

How far away are you from getting it completed?

Who is doing the tuning for you?

I'm a little ways out. Working in ND (650 miles from home) doesn't let me get much accomplished quickly. Hoping for late spring.

Keith at GDE is doing the tuning for me. Complete egr system delete, vgt vacum system delete, etc.

The step I'm at now, is the tranny and fuel system. Have a spare exhaust manifold that will get sent off and coated.

I need to start building the egr butterfly valve delete in the intake track. Plus deleting the rest of the egr system (valve, cooler)

Lots to do :banghead: I think it will be worth it. :SOMBRERO:

Awesome, one step at a time. Sounds like you are on the right track.

For the intake FCV delete, there is nothing to build. Just either unscrew the tubing flange from the FCV, pull the entire FCV and reinstall the flange... Or leave the FCV in place and just unscrew the butterfly disc from the center.

As for the EGR piping, a simple washer welded into the cut-off end of the tubing, and then sealed with welding wire works great to plug the intake hole. Some silicone RTV on the inside of that tubing's flanged surface before installation will ensure a secure seal, and re-use the clamp. Instant clean intake system.

Removing the EGR entirely is now optional - I left mine in place b/c I didn't feel like digging it out of there and it isn't hurting anything by just sitting there.
