Curious: How often (how many miles) is everyone finding they must drain the Provent waste?

I ran a 5/16" diameter drain hose out of it down to the front bumper. About 8" of oil will accumulate in the end of that hose in only 1000 miles, so I could go a few thousand without draining it.

Drain ~ every oil change it accumulates about 1 oz/ thousand miles - unless it's humid outside and then add a fair about on condensate to that.
however - if you overfill the oil - it'll blow most of the extra through the Provent pretty quickly......

So, how often do we change the Provent insert/filter? If at all.

I have never changed mine in almost two years. it looks oil soaked but not bad. some say you can clean it with Kero or diesel fuel.

if you over fill the oil yes it will fill much faster.

You'd need to change the insert if it's torn or damaged

The Provent isn't really a filter, it's more of a condensation 'trap' for lack of a better word. The oil is in suspension in the air - caused by moving parts hitting oil drops in the crankcase. As soon as the drops hit anything solid they condense out - and run down to the bottom of the Provent. So the key on whether it's working is the amount of oil collecting in the bottom hose - not how black the element is. The Provent is sized for an engine 3x the size of the CRD.

Finally got around to installing my MH Provent last night, went real smooth (1.5 hr) thanks to all your help/suggestions.

Finished Job:
Image

I didn't really want to be emptying the waste line all the time, so I decided to experiment a little with the oil collection. I am using a standard female garden hose fitting with a male stem clamped into the 3/8 tubing coming off the bottom of provent, the female fitting then threads perfectly into a 500ml water bottle.

Image

The bottle is currently hanging slightly lower (1" - 1.5") than the skid plate, we don't do any REAL off-roading so I doubt it will ever rub.
(you'll also notice my new fumoto valve in the pic, put on a couple weeks ago, am actually looking forward to my next oil change now :D )

Image

If the water bottle idea doesn't work out I'll just thread on a ball valve to the garden hose fitting to make draining easy just like the fumoto quick valve.

You still need to poke holes in that bottle so you don't build up pressure and blow the turbo seal.

No a crankcase vent is just that, a vent for the crankcase. The crankcase will build up pressure and will find the point of least resistance to relieve it's pressure. That includes the turbo seal oil seal.

Wouldn't the point of least resistance on a Provent be the 1psi relief valve that comes built into the unit?

Is the coke bottle attached to the bottom of Provent? Not the outlet port correct?

Then no holes are needed. The pressure will cycle through back to intake, but if Provent freezes/clogs, than 1psi relief will kick in.

Holes are not needed - that's why the Provent has a 1psi blowoff valve.
if it clogs - it blows the valve
and if you have an opening in the drain - it'll pull in unfiltered air into the intake manifold.

The folks with problems are the EHM people who freeze ice plugs in the end.

I assumed that since the stock hose was a sealed line, that the provent being a sealed system would only make sense. Is that reasonable?

arengant- yes the bottle is connected to the bottom on the provent

Lancer- see above pic, it is located on passenger side corner closest to windshield (behind the vacuum solenoid & beside coolant res). here is a write-up i found helpful, but I used arengant's advice in this very thread on how to reduce the hose ID (thanks btw :D )

http://www.one-ring.net/jeep/gallery/vi ... nt-install

Anyway, have driven a couple hundred km since the install and no problems to report.

Glad it's working!

And like ATXKJ said, poking holes (or if a line/clamp comes lose) will be HARMFUL, not helpful :)
