I realized after doing the ORM mod on my CRD yesterday that the check engine light was not illuminating. Only had the vehicle for a few months. Hoping the dealer didn't disable it and sell it to me with a light on (but not). I know the bulb could be dead, but in all my years never had a dash light go out on me. Is there anything else I should check to make sure its the bulb before I go tearing apart the dash?

Turn the key to run(do not start),the check engine light should turn on and stay on.If it does not you could have a burnt out bulb. Most likely done by the 1st owner as this is not something checked by the dealer(or any car lot).

The light does not come on with key switch to accessory mode.
Good thought about the PO... Hopefully he was running ORM with the MAF unplugged as well, and just removed the bulb (or burnt it out with the CEL being on all the time).

it is an LED and therefore not as easy to remove as a regular bulb (not saying it is impossible)

I must have the wrong part number cross reference, because I came up with this: Wagner PC74 miniature bulb, and from the pictures I've seen, its just the regular halogen type....

could be a fuse...

...correct me if I'm wrong guys.

Just chagned the cavity 7 fuse that was bad. With it being blown, it disabled my front and rear running lights. Bulbs were fine.

No the Check Engine light is not controlled by a fuse (the entire cluster would not be working if it was a fuse)

Thank you very much for the picture.
Is the LED even serviceable?
Else, are there lights LEDs installed in the dash that aren't used? Unfortunately I know the CRD's have the highest lamp utilization. If not, I'll have to find a dash unit from a junk yard and salvage the LEDs from it and do my own soldering job.
Thanks again, all very helpful info.

Edit.... Borrowed an OBDII scan tool from a friend. Will find out this weekend if the tool thinks the light should be on or not. Or worse... how many FC's are really there :?

OBDII tool showed 9 fault codes and that the MIL light should be on. Clearly have a burnt out LED.

gtommec, do the LED's look like they can be soldered on rather easily? Would be great if you had a picture of the back of the dash circuit board as well. I'm going to assume that there is no part number for these and that I'm stuck digging a dash out of a junk yard - will at least give me some experience on taking it apart on a junker before I do it on my own :)

I have seen a number of posts like this where the previous owner or the dealer have pulled the LED up off the back of the board. They can be replaced if you are able to use a small soldering iron and there may be some LEDs that are not used on your Jeep....I do not have front fog/driving lights on my Jeep but there is a LED fitted which would tell me if I did have those lights on. If you get another dash from a breaker...try to get the same one as your vehicle has....there is a small identification number below the speedo....mine shows a "33" I think. :)
