Hi guys,

I recently had some issues with my front drive shaft (notorious blown boot on TC end). I took it off until I could get a new cv for the TC end and drove it for a few months, no issues. Today, I installed the new CV and put the shaft back on. In a parking lot I tested it out. No more noise in 2WD or 4WD part time. However, when I put it into 4WD full time, and turn or slow down, I can hear the front diff whining. Almost like something keeps spinning when I stop. The noise only stops when I put it back into 4WD Part time or 2WD.

Any ideas what this could be??

I crawled back under to check and all the bolts are well torqued. I can't figure it out.

Thanks in advance.

How can you be sure its the front diff making noise?

I guess I'm not 100% sure, could be the TC? Sounded like it was coming from the front of the vehicle, lead me to the front diff.

Edit:

I checked again and it is actually the CV I just replaced spinning around when the vehicle is stopped (Transfer case end). Checked and retourqued the bolts again. Still spinning after stopped (only in 4WD Full Time). What did I do wrong?

Did you get it seated on the drive shaft's splined end? It seems like it might be possible to install that CV backwards. I don't think it would spin though. You might just check it to be sure...

The CV can articulate, but it can't turn unless the drive shaft is turning along with it. If its turning while the drive shaft is still, there is something very wrong with the CV.

That makes sense. I'm thinking now that when I installed the driveshaft I must have slid the shaft out of the CV and it's not seated right. I will have to double check.

I'm an idiot. After taking the drive shaft off again and re-seating the shaft in the new CV, I noticed the retaining clip was sitting in my magnetic tray. No wonder it didn't work.

Thanks for your help troubleshooting.
