Dodge; 5143160AA ~$131.82 local dealer
AIRTEX; Part # E7181M ~$134 RockAuto
CARTER Part # P76148M ~$180.79 RockAuto
AIRTEX Part # E7213M ~$341.79 RockAuto

Basically it comes down to getting an OEM pump from the local dealer at the same time as the wiring harness, or getting the airtex at the same time as I get a new serpentine belt.

I suppose I'll go ahead and order a new update filter head, and I have to get the wiring harness, so either way I'm order parts from the dealer and some parts from rockauto.

I didn't buy the harness. I just added 2 wires to the set and ordered the pin connectors.

You need 18 gauge wire and FCI Apex 2.8mm terminals.
Two female (#54001800) and one male (#54001801).

Maybe you can skip the dealer.

Filter head is coming from the dealer anyway. No local source for connectors, if anything I would just rob some connectors out of some old jeep wiring harness's. I just want to get parts coming and not fight this the hard way.

Thoughts on pump?

Well I just finished talking to Airtex tech and they said the max pressure on the E7187M is 11.6 psi and on the E7181M is 15.95 psi and I asked twice and the tech rechecked his data also so I hope this doesn't ruin anyones day but I always say its better to know! Go to the source, I was one click away from ordering the E7181M, I like the idea of the lift pump in the tank and I thought I better call Airtex tech support so now you know the true pressure have a good holiday! crdjoe..... its a love hate relationship!

So none of the above.
Maybe go with the E7187M or 5143160AB.

X2

I may be doing the same. For five days I have been checking CRD #2 daily for air and removing it before starting,, taking 8-10 pumps. So far I have not had any more cold start issues since.

Ok so this is the cummins pump?

This is cut and paste from my notes:
Quote:
The CRD has a tendency to trap air in the fuel filter which leads to a rough running engine. The solution is to add a lift pump in the fuel tank. The in-tank lift pump sending unit is from an '05 to '06 Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 (part # 5143160AB or Airtex E7187M).

Note that this is the updated 11.6 psi pump; the original 5143160AA (Airtex E7181M) pump was 15.95 psi.

So, okay, I can't specifically say that the Cummins pump is the same or have the same part #. From what I have read in the past though, folks have said that it is so. I never really cared since I could get the Dodge version.

Sir Sam

Since you are changing the fuel filter head, I always thought that this had great potential:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=29149

Possibly makes changing the filter faster and cleaner.

I like the idea of the fleetguard FS19586

Anyone know the part number of the one with the lift pump?

Well I ordered up this stuff:

Wiring: 56050284AB $43.99 3-5days
New Filter head: 68043089AA $94.99
New Filter head wiring: 68043086AB $11.99

Gonna go with the airtex, the OEM was showing $211 for my price as a remain.....pass.

Sam, what are the indicators that a lift pump would help/is needed for engine performance?

Also which Airtex pump did you order?

Thanks, Tony

Airtex: E7181M

Signs of needing a lift pump, massive amounts of air in fuel, stalling, hard starts, long crank times. All that good stuff.

Hey Sir Sam, How well did your lift pump install go? Did you have to modify the new harness that you ordered?
Any other tips to share?

Ya I stripped a couple of wires out of the new harness and installed them into my old harness, all in all I think it would have been easier to just modify the 05 harness.

They way I did it I removed the wire from the donor, installed it into the old one, and added a bit of length up in the cabin area of the harness to make up for the the fact the gasser harness is 5" shorter.

In retrospect I think the easier option would have been to use the gasser harness, all I would have needed to do were move the level sender pins to the correct place on the gasser harness, the rear speed sensor wires were in the same place and the lift pump POS+ wire is in the correct place. The ground wire just simply returns to ground.

However doing it the way I did it insures that I have leftover bits of wire for the future, I will be able to modify other harness's in the future with my leftovers.

I clicked on this link to order the terminals with no luck. Any suggestions as to where to buy in small quantities?

Could you clarify with pictures by chance?
