Removing Tire Pressure Sensors

When I had my wheels swapped out from the stock ones to my steelies, I asked the tire shop to transfer over my TPMS as well. They pulled one off, then told me they had issues and couldn't get any of the others off so I've been driving around with an idiot light on my dash and chiming for a little over half a year now. I was curious what I need to do to get the rest of the sensors off the wheels or if anyone has done this? I'd like to be able to put them on the steelies for when I upgrade to some bigger tires.

Also this is for a 2008, I think I remember reading that they may have changed them after this year.

Just buy four new ones and have them installed. The batteries go bad in them after about five years anyway. They aren't too expensive from what I remember. 20 each at the most

$20?? I was quoted at like $75 each. If that's the case then it's not really a problem.

edit: I just called up the dealership and they quoted me at $93.15 a pop :furious:

That is more than a wheel costs!

Also they gave me that for the part # 56029479AA which is the newer sensor and told me that they would fit with my 2008. The sensor that I pulled off my wheel was 56053036AA ($49.10 on moparonlineparts.com, still a little more than I would have wanted... considering mounting/balancing tires are only like $100).

Also a separate question... My vehicle came stock with a donut, which I have since gotten rid of in replace for a full size spare. Was there a sensor in my donut as well? Do I need to get a sensor for my full size spare?

I just swapped out my compact spare for a full size also. There was no tire pressure sensor in the donut spare. The KK's that came from the factory with a full size spare tire and matching rim do have a 5th tire pressure sensor, as far as I know. I didn't bother ordering a sensor for my new spare, because I also was quoted something outrageous like $90.

Now that i recall, they were about 50 a piece, ordered online, though i forget where. Then i just brought it to a tire place, but i the tires weren't mounting on the rims yet, so i had it all done at once.

I got quoted for about the same from the dealership. I had no idea they were so expensive. I had to dish out the $$ for em because I was in a pinch and needed to get to work

Came out to $117 with labor :'(

Is it possible to do away with the preasure sensors. And have the warning system disengaged from the instumentation inside on the dash. David

You can remove the sensors but you can not disable the warnings unless you pull apart the IC.The StarScan can disable it all together but but good luck finding a dealer that will do it as it is against federal law to disable the TPMS system.

You can put them inside a piece of capped pvc/abs pipe with a valve stem mounted on it and pressurize it to 35 psi. Tire shops may/may not deal with you though because technically your tpms is still disabled. Also if law enforcement found a pipe bomb looking thing in your truck....

I got my replacements from Amazon, included free shipping for around $36.00 each. Just get them, put them in when you get your new tires and be done with it. The tire company that installed my tires put them in for no additional charge.

By the way, sensors in a pipe with air pumped in does not work. Your sensors work off of rotational movement or need to be calibrated with a magnet depending on the year and make of the sensor. There is a thread in here somewhere on that.

Rotational movement? My wheels aren't rotating when it's in park.
Also, aren't the sensors that came with the truck calibrated already?
(assuming he can get the sensors off)

There is a ton of information on line regarding TPMS. Check it out, lots of interesting stuff. You will find answers to all of your questions.

Many Chrysler vehicles are equipped with tire pressure monitoring systems, or TPMSs, that display warnings on the vehicles' instrument panels if the air pressure in any of the vehicles' tires become underinflated. The TPMS warning light stays on as long as the low tire pressure condition exists. The only way to reset the system is to correct the underinflation by adding air to whichever tire or tires need it, then giving the Chrysler a chance to detect the change while you're driving.

Park the car on a flat surface. Turn off the engine.

Remove the cap from the valve stem of one tire. Press the head of the tire pressure gauge over the valve stem firmly so that it creates a seal around the stem, holding air in the tire. Pull the gauge off the stem and note the gauge's reading. If the pressure is below the manufacturer's recommended pressure, you'll have to add air. Go to Step 3.

Press the nozzle of your compressed air source onto the valve stem for any tire that needs air to be added. Remove the nozzle after a few seconds and measure the pressure with the gauge again. Continue this process until each tire is inflated to the proper pressure. Recommended pressure for each tire is printed on the side of the tire.

Replace the cap on the valve stem when the tire has the proper amount of air, then move to another tire. Follow these steps on all four tires.

Start the engine. Drive the vehicle for up to 20 minutes, above 15 mph, to give the TPMS a chance to detect the pressure accurately and reset itself.
