When I bought the car I saw this and could not figure out what it was, the PO told me it was like that when he bought it and everything worked fine; everything does work fine.

Image

So, a few days ago I noticed something wired in between the center console and the driver's seat, I poked around a bit and realized it was the remaining of an overheated/burnt wire and some burning to the floor carpet. I tested all the electrical and everything seems to work fine, including the rear window controls on the back of the center console.

Image

Here's another one.

Image

One thing it has not worked since I bought the car and the PO told me it was also like that since he bought it was the passenger's side airbag, what I mean is: the light on the handle bar in front of the passenger's seat stays always on (as in the airbag is off) even when somebody seats on it; also the malfunction light next to it stays on all the time.

1) Is it possible that the airbag wiring for the passenger side is routed under the center console on the driver's side? Could this wire be the problem with the passenger air bag?

2) Has anybody else seen this?

3) Does anybody know what that wire is for?

Thank you for your responses!!!!

I don't know what is is for, but that is flat out scary. could've burnt Libby to the ground
I would be pulling stuff apart immmediately trying to find out where it goes.
My first guess would be maybe the original owner had some extra music accesories in the back, maybe a sub or something???

What he Said I would bet that what that wire went too is not factory installed but I would take the cover off and trace it back to see. seeing burned wires is not something I'd like. that could have burned the jeep down and what if that could still get power to it

I know.... that's the first thing I thought. Now the wire is burnt and cut, so it does not lead anywhere, I think I should be safe, but I'll pull the center console off this afternoon when I finish with work. Just wanted to see if anybody knows what I will find down there, I do not like surprises like this one :(

if you find something other than an PO installed wire I'm sure we want to know what it may go to.

is your Jeep a CRD sport with black leather seats?

I could not wait any longer, I went a poked around some more, the wire is not there anymore, It's definitely an aftermarket something a PO had there. I found more burnt places towards the back of the console where the wire seems to have gone out and ..... God knows where. I traced the burnt wire, or the burnt marks, the wire is not there anymore as I said, just the little piece on the picture, anyway.... the burnt marks go all the way under the steering wheel, no wire was found there either, but burnt marks on the insulation on the panel that goes under the steering wheel and some melting on the plastic panel itself.
I can sleep better now.
Is there anything I should check to see if that short caused any damage to the stock electrical system?

I guess so, it does not say sport or limited on the side, but does not have the chrome as in the limited so I imagine is the sport with the leather seats. Don't know what kind of package that was.... but I like it just fine, would not mind the limited sunroof though...

If you are curious what your vehicle came with I've had good luck getting the parts folks at a dealer print out a "build sheet" based on the VIN.

2x on that got one for mine too from local parts guy and service history at the time of sale. build sheet says I have remote start but I don't have the separate remote for that and they can't figure out how to order one or program one.

Your seats do not appear to be the original seats. If someone swapped in some different seats and did not include the correctly matched passenger seat occupancy sensor then the light light on the handle bar and the airbag light on the dash will always be lit.

Can you post some pictures of your seats? Either someone swapped them in and fubared the wiring or the wiring is unrelated, in either case getting your airbags functioning perfectly would probably be a matter of a dealer visit for an occupancy sensor recalibration.

Post a picture or two of your front seats and lets take it from there.

This routing is exactly the routing I ran the wire for our amp and inverter. This is a great example of the importance of proper fuse usage. That is really freakin scary.

I am curious, but not enough to go visit those arrogant sons of bitc#es at the dealer parts counter. Good idea though....

Will the airbag still work?

Dealer visit....???? :5SHOTS: Don't they fix airbags on body shops too?

Here we go with the pictures....

Front driver seat.

Another one showing the electric controls.

Here are the rear seats.

The warning lights on and part of my front seat desk.

Here's the sensor under the passenger seat.

Here's what it looks like under the passenger seat. All loose, I'm not quite sure that's the way it's supposed to be.

And last but not least, what it looks like under the driver's seat.

That's exactly what I think he had under the driver's seat, it's all gone now, wires and all...

Looks they've been recovered at the least. Original drivers seat was probably burnt a bit and all of them were replaced to match.

Dude I got bad news, those are not the correct seats for your vehicle, those are seats from a 2002-2004, and while they fit the vehicle the passenger seat does not have the occupancy sensor diaphragm.

There is a very good chance your passenger airbag is not functional, and the drivers airbag may not be functional either.

At the very least you need to replace the passenger seat with one from a 2005-2007, install your existing your existing occupancy sensor onto that seat, for the airbag system to be corrected.

I would say the melted wire and console have nothing to do with the airbag light, I'm pretty sure thats entirely caused by someone install the older, incorrect seat, that has shut down the airbag system.

Yes body shops replace airbags, but the dealer has a $6000 scan tool thats needed for programming the vehicle computers, in this case since you still have the old occupancy sensor in there you need only install it into a correct seat and can avoid going to the dealer to have them use their $6000 DRBIII.

So if you want your airbags to work you need different seat(s). The good news is there are lots of used cloth seats starting at around $50 that you could install to get your airbags working again. I see some leather passenger seats starting around $75........in any case your airbag system is never gonna be right with that passenger seat.

Not good news at all..... Wow..... at least now I know....

Can these seats be retrofitted with the sensor?

Where can I find the seats you mention?

Funny how none of this stuff comes up on a Carfax..... what a waste of money that is....

Thank you!!!

I wonder if I can just buy the sensor for the passenger side, plug it into the wires and trick it into thinking that there's someone sitting on the seat at all times....

Ya knowing is better.

Siardi wrote:

No, not at all, the 05+ seats were redesigned to have a diaphragm to sense the weight of the passenger to turn the airbag on and off, when its empty the light does nothing, when a light person(like a kid or my 55 pound golden retriever sits on the seats) the light comes on telling you its off, when my fatass sits on it it definitely doesn't light up.

Siardi wrote:

Sorry forgot that, car-part.com is a free website that lets you search different junkyards for parts, you can put in your zip and find the closest things to you, you could even get a pair of heated leather seats for the front that will be the correct style for your vehicle, but they will not match the rear in color or leather style. There were some very inexpensive cloth passenger seats(that you could bolt to your electric pedestal to) that your existing occupancy sensor will install onto. With your occupancy sensor installed into an 05+ pass seat your airbag system will be back to normal, but you'll have mismatched seats.

Siardi wrote:

Carfax is really worthless, it just mines various databases for information and stores it, it will even miss things like salvage titles on occasion. Carfax is not good for much, most accidents don't get reported to any sort of vin database because they just happen on the street where someone rear ends someone else, tickets are written and the the insurance takes care of fixing things, all sorts of stuff like that never gets reported to carfax. To top it off around here the insurance companies stopped issuing salvage titles to vehicles because they get more for them at auction with a clean title. They have no legal obligation to issue a salvage title and will make more if they sell it with a clean title.

No problem thats what I'm here for, you might consider filling in your profile with a location as it can help us out(like I could have told you there was a seat in town for $50 had I known your city/state/zip.)

You already have the sensor, it needs to be connected to diaphragm to sense the weight of the passenger to determine the airbag deployment force. These are multi stage airbags so based on the weight of the passenger they will not deploy, or deploy with two different levels of force. You need an 05+ seat for that to work.

I made some calls today and found a yard with a 2004 with grey leather seats, they would not tell me the price until they knew exactly what parts I needed, went all the way there (about 50 miles one way) to find out the dude wanted $250.00 per seat :furious: :furious: , not to mention they were sitting on a liberty with no doors outside for God knows how long, they were mold infested and the metal underneath was all rusted, I asked the guy to work on the price, he said " they will clean up really nice" (my as$... mold and rust is not something you can clean), turn around and walked away.

On the good side, I learned that the 2004 seats will work and that all I need is the diaphragm that goes under the seat, I can retrofit that and then go to the stealer to calibrate.

Now I'm looking for a cheap passenger seat for a 04, 05 or 06 (I guess they all fit).

Thank you Sir Sam. I'll keep posting my progress on this ordeal...

RetMil disassembled some seats and installed the 05 sensor on earlier seats.

here http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=691316#p691316
- of course he had the old/new side by side to disassemble, reassemble

maybe you could find a cheap junkyard passenger seat to disassemble - just for the sensor.
