Optima, yellow top Bought Nov 08 (3 yrs old).

Died Saturday night at party. Got a jump Sunday morning and drove home.

Didn't go anywhere on Sunday or Monday. Went to start Monday evening....dead and kept giving me a machine gun sound when trying to start.

CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK....everything going dim as I did it. Bought a 6amp medium charger and charged overnight.

Morning....same thing. Charger meter shows 100% charge........voltmeter says ~14v but drains fast as I tried to start (drops to about 12.5v) a couple times.

Is it the battery or could it be the Starter? Relay checked and is good.

Friend coming over in a few to jump it again so I can drive to Advance Auto. My guess is that if I can get it jumped.....it has to be the battery and not starter...or is it possible to throw enough power at the starter to force it to start even if bad?

Well it requires a special charger to charge AGM batteries.Your optima lasted about 1 year longer then most do now. It's the battery,it's dead and not going to be good anymore.Time to swing by Sears and get the P1 Platinum Series, better battery and better warranty.

Was able to jump KJ so I just knew it couldn't be the starter (Thank Goodness - didn't want to deal with getting off the armor, drive shaft, and exhaust). Since it was very close to 9pm, drove to Autozone and left the KJ running and locked (took key fob in with me). I just bought a new battery (Autocraft Gold series) from them. Since it was raining/snowing and didn't want to risk the store closing and changing the battery in those conditions and then it still not start, I drove home and pulled into the garage. As son as I turned off the KJ, I tried to restart. Same clicking noise so.......new battery installed and started right up.

The stock battery lasted 4 yrs 2months. Optima Yellow = exactly 3 yrs to this month (I have never used it for its deep cycle purposes either).

I had the same thing happen with my STOCK battery last week!! I'd planned on replacing the battery in the very near future anyway; it had a small crack next to the negative terminal. I wanted a Die-Hard platinum, but I needed a battery right then. I could have gone to Sears and paid cash for half the amount of the Die-Hard and put the balance on my Sears card...but I went to Autozone and got a Duralast Gold. The Duralast is rated at 1000 cranking amps / 880 cold cranking amps, with a three year free replacement /eight year pro-rated warranty for $129....

A few years back they were a great battery,
but quality has went into the storm sewers in recent years

I am still on my original 2005 Optima. It has been the best battery I have ever owned. I got one for my wife's car two years ago, and it will be interesting to see how the newer Optima performs. So far so good on both of them.

I checked out their website.

Yellow tops prior to Feb 2009 = 12 month free replacement, next 12 months prorated.
Purchased after Feb 2009 = 36 months free replacement.

What!? Did they change the battery that much after Feb 2009?

Looks like I am screwed in a replacement since I got mine Nov 2008.
