Bad news...I posted a part number from Jiggs for the in-line thermostat housing...they sent me the wrong thermostat. I posted part number 555-53212 which came in as a Chry/Dodge thermostate. The housing needs a Chrysler stat. They are just send me the new one without bother for the return.

In my defense and to completely blame Jiggs, I was very speciffic to ask for a 195 thermo that would fit this housing and Jiggs provided the wrong info. I now wish I had mot passed it on when trying to be helpful. Hope it did cause too much trouble for people.

You can get it from amazon.com, as I understand they have the best price.
And

a generic 195 degree Chevy thermostat from Napa (used a 1990 Chevy K1500)

GDE in the past has recommended 195. I suspect 205 is a bit too hot.

Well maybe not today. Which hose does it go in? radiator to OEM thermostat? And which direction does the head of the t-stat point towards the oem or towards the radiator.

I am also drilling the 1/8" in the flange above the o-ring oriented towards the bottom although it does appear that the overall orientation of the inline, is pitched so I don't thin i would matter

Thank you.

1. I oriented my thermostat so the spring is closest to the block (allowing the hot water to open it at the correct time)

2. Yes, the hose from radiator to oem stat, making sure the new housing touches the OEM stat housing (you'll need about two inches of hose to accomplish this)

3. The hole should be drilled in the middle of the flat disk, between the outer edge and the opening itself.

Now I am confused, the hose has an OD of 2", the replacement part says an ID of 1.47" is that correct? the hose is 0.26" thick? I don't wanna take this of and have an issue.

Don't expect hose ID/OD measurements to be an exact science. The upper radiator hose has a nominal OD of 2" and a nominal ID of 1.5" and yes the hose walls are quite thick. I just looked at my upper OEM hose.

I just did mine yesterday as instructed and wow! What a difference; needle used to get to about 2 lines from center and take 20 min. to get there. Now it goes right to the middle line in about 5 minutes and gets at least 2-3 MPG better( I drove 600 miles since install). The heat is definitely hotter and faster.

I am so glad I found this thread, the stock T stat sucks to change.

Paul

The garage was most impressed with the in line thermo. She heats up wonderfully now and my mileage has definitely gone up!!!

I will have to adjust my Fuelly tag soon.

Ordered mine yesterday. My old stat. has dropped a knotch to the second back from center on the guage. I have lost a little fuel mileage recently and hope this fix helps that. Do we have to drain down the coolant before this install or just replace what is lost? Will pick up hose clamps, thermostat and coolant at NAPA today. GDE TCM tune next project if Christmas bonus comes through.

You either need to drain it down, you can capture and reuse, or accept whatever you lose when you pop the upper radiator hose. Either way you will have to top the system off once done.

Has anyone done an "official" write-up yet?

I lack confidence without pictures

Dumb it right down for me :)

I don't think there is an "official" writeup here on on the CRD tech site, maybe someone who has done the install can provide same with picture as I have not. However I've pasted below notes from a successful install

In-line thermostat install per arengant on LOST - per arengant

Another successful inline thermostat customer. I purchased the Meziere WN0072 Inline Thermostat Housing from Amazon.com 1.5” diameter for 55 bucks (note price has gone up on Amazon - check around for ones at about $65) .

http://www.amazon.com/Meziere-WN0072-In ... 131&sr=1-2

Then I purchased a generic 195 degree Chevy thermostat from Napa (used a 1990 Chevy K1500). Before drilling the bypass hole, it took a few extra moments to open fully, causing the temp to spike. I disassembled, drilled a 3/32 (later note from arengant says he thinks he actually did a 1/8" hole) hole in the outside edge (that would be in the tstat skirt midway between the inner opening and outer edge-see below) of thermostat and reinstalled. Now everything works great! I cut about 2” total off of the upper radiator hose, and bought two hose clamps. The whole project can be done in about 30 minutes easy.

1. I oriented my thermostat so the spring is closest to the block (allowing the hot water to open it at the correct time)
2. Install in the hose from radiator to oem stat, making sure the new housing touches the OEM stat housing (you'll need about two inches of hose to accomplish this)
3. The hole should be drilled in the middle of the flat disk, between the outer edge and the opening itself.
